QUITTING GMAIL - alternatives for email, calendar, contacts
As I keep exploring alternatives to Google services, I'm now looking into which email services can replace the allmighty Gmail. I won't be looking at other big companies services, such as Outlook.com, since they have the same weird practices as Google. Let's look at our options !

Why quitting gmail
Gmail is a great service. It's free, it has plenty of storage, uses labels, allows to archive messages, and generally looks pretty good. It's also using all your data and reading all your emails. That's the main problem, for me.
Proton Mail
It's a solution designed to be as private as possible, where everything is encrypted, and no information is shared.
Your email account can be created without giving any personal info, and it is of course open source as well.
Proton Mail has a free tier, limited to 500Mb of storage and 150 emails per day, which is more than enough for my needs. More demanding users can part with about 4 euros a month, upping the storage to 5gb and 1000 emails per day. This tier also allows you to use your own email domain, and create up to 5 email addresses.
Interface-wise, Proton Mail looks alright. It doesn't have the clean, nice look of Gmail or Outlook.com, and the colors are not really to my tastes, but if you feel like it, you can use custom CSS to style it the way you like.
Proton mail can import your contacts, but unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any sync options with third party clients. The whole thing being encrypted makes regular email clients unable to read or access anything. There is an application, called Proton Bridge, that allows you to sync your email on a client, but it only works on Thunderbird, and is still in beta.
Net - Courier
Net C, or Net courrier, is a european mail provider. They not only provide an email service, but also some storage space (500Mo by default), an adress book, calendar, and photo storage service.
Creating an account is free, and lets you pick the domain name between a bunch of different propositions.
The TLDR is that free accounts are subjected to ads through third party cookies, including targeted ads, and premium accounts are not. Net-C won't read your emails, though, to offer ads specifically taileord to what you wrote or received.
Looks-wise, Net-C isn't that great, with a huge header, and boxy design, but it's clear enough, and can be customized, with different colors and sizes.
If you don't like the webmail, though, you can sync email with any IMAP capable client, as well as the calendar with caldav and ICS, and the address book with carddav. Net-C also supports Exchange Active Sync if you're into that sort of thing.
Even the storage space can be accessed remotely through FTP or WebDa

1 - Your options
KDE Plasma can be tweaked in any number of ways. From the desktop layout with widgets, to the colors, the look and feel, and the themes, you can pretty much do anything you like to make your desktop behave how you want it. So what can you change ?
Plasma lets you change the look of the desktop in one click with the "Look and feel" option. By default, you'll get a Breeze and Breeze dark option, but you can download new looks and apply them in one click from the settings.
Yiu can then change any part of the desktop look individually: desktop theme, which will change the widgets look, cursor theme, for that mouse cursor, and splash screen, for that loading screen you'll barely see when starting your session.
2 - Desktop theme
This is how your widgets will look. By default, you'll be using the breeze theme, but there are plenty of other options available. To get more, click on "get new themes", and you'll be able to preview and download any number of themes to change how your widgets look. My favorite is the Oxygen theme of old, with nice clean black background and white edges, but you can go crazy and install anything.
3 - Cursor theme
This is the look of your mouse cursor, from the standard arrow to the animation when loading stuff, or the little hand to click links. There again, a "get new themes" button allows you to one-click install new mouse themes and apply them on the fly. There are even some left handed variants for you to download. Select the one you want, click apply, and you're good to go !
4 - Splash screen
This is the screen that pop up when you login into your session. Not much incentive to tweak this one, but there are plenty to choose from the "get new them" button
5 - Icons
This one is available from the main settings menu. Once again, the "get new themes" is your friend, and will let you download icon themes very quickly. Some icons will allow you to select from multiple install files, it is generally a good practice to pick up the latest version available.
5 - Application style
This is how your apps will look ! By default, you'll be using the Breeze theme, which is KDE's default. It does look a bit dated in my opinion, with buttons sporting drop shadows. You can configure Breeze here, with a lot of options, such as centering tabs, drawing toolbars separators or not, enabling animations, configuring scrollbar buttons, or tweaking menu transparency.
TO get new themes, there are no "get new themes button" here. I found, one one of the viewer's advice, the plasma-oxygen-theme, which is excellent and what I was looking for all along ! You can install it from the terminal, with

elementary OS has passed 117 total apps in the AppCenter, with more than 87 available already for elementary Juno. With this healthy growing number, it's time we take a look at some useful productivity apps !
Timetable
Fairly new to the AppCenter, Timetable is another product of Lains, a very prolific eklementary OS app developer, responsible for notejot, a simple note taking app, quilter, which we'll talk more about in a minute, or Aesop, a nicely designed PDF reader.
Timetable aims to let you organize your week by creating tasks for each day. Very simple in appearance, it allows you to set colors for tasks, to group them by urgency, or by project, and lets you select the time period for each.
Timetable is perfect for creating your student schedule, or simply organizing a very busy week. You can switch the color scheme between three different ones, although the differences are minor, and choose to display the weekend days or not.
Timetable is available in the AppCenter for free.
Spice Up
One you might already know, SPice Up is a very good looking presentation making app. It comes with nice pre-made templates, and has been steadily updated durint 2018. It now supports transitions between slides, presenter notes, and as always, you can add text, images, and basic shapes to your slides, with a bunch of color options, as well as the ability to export to PDF.
It's no LibreOffice competitor in terms of features, but for simple, easy to creates slide decks you don't have to share, it's a fantastic tool !
Spice Up is available on the AppCenter with an asking price of 20$, which I find quite steep, bu as alaways with elementary, you're free to choose the amount you'd like to pay for it !
Quilter
Quilter is one of my favorite elementary OS apps. Another one of Lains products, it's a simple but efficient markdown editor. It has been updated recently to receive a sidebar to handle multiple files, and works with two modes;: the edit mode, where you type using the markdown syntax, and the preview mode, where you look at the content as it's being rendered.
Quilter supports three color schemes, white, sepia, and dark, and even has a focus mode, to focus on the line or paragraph you're writing, and making the rest of your text fade in the background.
THe preferences allow you to tweak how the focus mode works, how the interface looks, as well as enabling spellchecking.
Quilter is available for free, and is a serious contender for the the number one spot on my list of apps which I like to write with.
Taxi
If you have to connect to FTPs regularly, Taxi is the app you need. It allows you to connect to FTP, SFTP, DAV? and AFP file servers, with upload, download, and even supports favorites to remember your connections and login / passwords.

## The Interface
- Uses GNOME-Shell, with the dash2panel extension to mimic what Chrome OS looks like
- It has a main menu, a favorites list, date and time indicator, and the regular system stuff
- It uses the Adapta theme and the papirus icons
- It all give it some kind of older Android look and feel, but it's not unpleasant
- The GNOME shell doesn't seem themed at all
## The apps
- Very minimal installation by default:
- only a few web apps, a local file manager, Nautilus
- An archive manager, calculator, document scanner, and screenshot tool, plus the GNOME settings. You also have the system monitor, and GNOME boxes for some reason
- No GNOME software, but you have a terminal, so you can install it
- There are a bunch of webapps preinstalled though, including all the /e/ services
- /e/ has online services based on Nextcloud, including cloud storage, but only 1Gb of it, a calendar, a contact directory, en email address, notes, photos, and tasks
- All of these apps will just take you to the corresponding tab in your /e/ nextcloud account, that you can create directly by launching any of these apps
- If you don't want to use /e/ services, you can decide not to use them, or remove them
- There is a super simple tool to let you remove installed web apps. it's not pretty, but it works
- You also get Firefox, of course, which is the base for all of these webapps, as they'll open in a Firefox window, without any of the toolbars
- You also get a link to Mastodon, and Soundcloud, as well ad Dtube, so you have alternatives for social media, youtube, and music
- No Snap or Flatpak installed: They're really not pushing

## What is Phosh
Phosh is GNOME shell, re-jigged for mobile. It's developed mainly by Purism, for their Librem5. It's open source, used by a lot of distros that you can flash to and SD card and use on the pinephone for example.
I'm trying this out on the baseline Pinephone model, with Manjaro Phosh, but you could also try phosh on Fedora, Debian, Manjaro, postmarket OS...
Obviously it's manjaro, so expect more apps than the default, and a specific icon theme, which I changed so it would look more "vanilla".
It's only one of the available mobile interfaces for Linux mobile devices, you could also get Plasma mobile, Ubuntu touch, and a lot of other.
I'll only talk about Phosh, not the battery life, the use of hardware, etc... as it is dependent on what you'll run it on: pinephone, Librem 5, or maybe something else in the future.
## The shell
Phosh takes the concept of GNOME shell, and moves it to a mobile form factor. Basically, you've got this arrow at the bottom of the screen, which brings up the activities view, combined with the app grid.
You'll see all your running apps, and the ones you can launch as well, on the same screen. It's a simple enough interface, although it might not scale all that well when people have the option to install tons of applications. There is a search feature, obviously, which only searches through applications, you won't get the full system search you can enjoy in desktop GNOME here.
Up top, you get your standard indicators, with the cellular icon, which is not enabled here as I haven't moved my SIM to the pinephone, the wifi, bluetooth, time, and battery.
Clicking in that black area up top displays the settings shade, with quick settings, much like on Android. You can't customize these, but you'll get the essentials: rotation, do not disturb, flashlight, and docking

The new quick toggles let you enable or disable these features in one click. Clicking the little arrow will expand the setting, letting you switch to another wifi network, change the power profile on your laptop, or even select the audio output and inputs.
In the apps grid, you now get some pagination arrows to let you move easily from one page to the other if you're not using a touchpad.
The File manager has also received a lot of love. First, it's now adaptive. The list view also makes it a lot easier to select multiple files and folders. There's also some blank space between elements so you can use the context menu inside the current directory, and it lets you drag the mouse to select multiple files.
The properties dialog has also been revamped, the recents folder can now be sorted, and the search UI saw a nice revamp as well, with a filter icon replacing the drop down arrow Nautilus used previously.
You can also middle click the next or previous button to open the resultant directory in a new tab, thumbnails with transparency will display a checkerboard background, you can copy the current path to the clipboard from the context menu, or open the current directory in other apps from the same menu, and the tabs have a new look.
The new Device Security page is accessible from the Privacy panel, and it gives you some details about the status of your hardware and firmware. All of this is combined into a security level ranging from 0 to 3, 3 being the highest, that will let you know whether your hardware is safe or not.
The Calendar is getting a new sidebar with a datepicker and an agenda view, and it's responsive. You also get a new pinch to zoom gesture to scale the main view.
Epiphany now supports webextensions, so you can install Firefox and Chrome extensions inside it. All you have to do is download the xpi or crx file, and add them from Epiphany's "Extensions" menu. Epiphany also gets the "view source" option.
GNOME software also got some love, with performance tweaks and improvements, and a better drop down to select the packaging format, now indicated by a big colored pill. You'll also be able to see other apps made by the same developer as the one you're currently looking at.
If you installed web apps using GNOME web, and if your distro has that support enabled, GNOME software can also manage web apps.
GNOME contacts can now import and export vcard contacts, which is nice, because that's a pretty basic feature for a contacts app.
