The Teck Oil Sands Mine - Will the Public Interest Be Betrayed?
The Canadian federal government is considering the report of a joint Canada-Alberta environmental review panel that assessed the proposed Teck Resources Frontier Oil Sands project. Robert Lyman, former public servant of 27 years and diplomat for 10 years, has written a new report. The Hon. Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, implied in his recent public statements that federal approval might depend on whether the Province of Alberta committed to more aggressive emissions mitigation policies, including tougher targets and dropping the legal opposition to federal carbon dioxide taxes. There have been press leaks suggesting that the federal Cabinet is preparing to deny the Frontier project but “compensate” Alberta in some way. Robert Lyman offers his insights on what constitutes good public policy in the public interest in: https://blog.friendsofscience.org/2020/02/07/the-teck-oil-sands-mine-will-the-public-interest-be-betrayed/ ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wx98j_KmQA
Dr. John Harper, former director of the Geological Survey of Canada says that the 600 million year history of climate change shows that climate change is beyond our control. Climate always changes. A warming climate releases CO2 into the atmosphere. Dr. Harper recommends to provide incentives to industry to clean up real pollution. This version includes some illustrative arrows for citizens who are not familiar with reading graphs of geologic time, to show past warming and cooling cycles and where we are today in terms of natural cycles.

A short take on how NetZero goals hands the economic advantage to China. So, it’s not really about climate change if Europe and North America are rejecting cheap Chinese EVs and solar panels - with Dr. Benny Peiser of the Global Warming Policy Foundation of the UK. COP 27 took place in Egypt from Nov. 6, 2022 to Nov. 18 2022. 'COP" stands for the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Some 35,000 people flew to Egypt to 'save the planet' at the conference, held at the lovely resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on the Red Sea. This is a light-hearted look at what the planet-savers were up to for those two weeks, making lots of emissions and make trillion dollar promises with your money to 'stop climate change' by throwing money at developing nations who successfully campaigned for "Loss and Damages" to be including in COP negotiations - aka 'climate reparations.' The UN climate conference wrapped up just in time for the 8th Egypt Oil and Gas Conference. FreedomTalk 2019 addressed many aspects of national unity. Michelle Stirling, Communications Manager for Friends of Science Society, gave this presentation on 'Foreign Fingers in the Pie", reviewing some highlights of foreign funding to various charities in Canada and the Tar Sands Campaign. These reports were complied by Robert Lyman, former public servant of 27 years, diplomat for 10 years. Michelle gives a brief overview of the four reports and expresses her view that this influence has driven a rift between regions in Canada. She discusses how the charitable status of many of the groups involved in the Tar Sands Campaign mean that all Canadians are unwittingly funding activity that is blocking jobs and the economy. The Alberta wildfires of May 2023 have wrought great destruction in the north western part of the province. Many people are calling this unprecedented; media are claiming it is all because human-caused global warming. In fact, May IS wildfire month in Alberta, all of the biggest wildfires have been in May for the past 100 years. Fort Mac - 2016, Slave Lake - 2011 (arson), Chinchaga Firestorm - 1950, and Lac la Biche - 1919 - all were May fires and all were hugely destructive. Alberta and BC face additional challenges today. There are millions of hectares of standing deadwood from the Mountain Pine Beetle Infestation. And across the Prairies, there was very little precipitation in April, in a period following three years of La Nina cycle. So, be prepared for wildfires in May. Be extra careful when working outside. Observe fire bans and safety recommendations of FireSmart and your community. Pack a 72 hour emergency evacuation kit and have it ready, just in case. Wildfires are extremely unpredictable, especially in hot, windy conditions.

This is a studio production of the Friends of Science President's message, originally webcast live to our members. This is a revised version that includes another 30 s. Ron Davison, President of Friends of Science, discusses the futility of Net Zero targets and presents evidence showing that there is no climate emergency. Attempting to flip our economy to meet climate targets will impose untenable debt on your children and grandchildren for now climate or environmental benefit. Please listen to what Ron has to say.
