The company seems dead set on removing a functionality they used to advertise pretty hard. And that is the AVX 512 instruction set for their Alder lake CPU’s. Now as is, Intel never really mentioned AVX 512 support for the 12th gen series of CPU’s, but the silicon itself supports it. There’s a great video out there from derbauer explaining how to actually use it. All you really had to do was disable the E-cores and boom, AVX 512 was turned on. Well starting now, intel will advise motherboard manufacturers to disable the feature either in the bios or through a microcode update. AVX 512 is used in some programs, like the blender cycles renderer or it can accelerate things like scientific simulations, financial analytics, AI, and others. So it’s not trivial. But if you game, its basically never used by developers, so it’s fine. It’s just a shame that those that could have taken advantage of it won’t be able to. Also with intel, Let’s talk XE… or ARC. Or alchemist I guess. One of their discrete GPU’s has been spotted on the SiSoft Sandra online database. Specifically, it was the A380. What is supposed to be the mid to low-range performer on intel’s stack. Now, as we’ve heard through the rumors, Intel isnt gunning for the top spot in this first generation of gpu’s, which means that this will not be a mid-range performing card like a 6600 series from amd or a 3060 from Nvidia. Anyways, back to the leak, the A380 was found by momomo US on twitter and according to what we can see here, it has 128 execution units for 1024 stream processors, would be clocked at 2.45Ghz, so pretty high clocks here, and.. 4.8GB of vram ? Yeah, that doesn’t sound right, but anyway, moving on, with its score within the database, it places itself right under a 3050 ti laptop GPU , and an RX 580X and right above a 1650 super. Now, if that’s any representation of gaming performance, its not bad. Especially considering this is the 128 EU version of the card. Remember, Intel is possibly planning a 256, 384 and 512 EU version of the Alchemist SOC. Let's get started with AMD, a couple of videos ago, I talked about their new platform, AM5, and how, unfortunately, it's not the best value for the money if you’re looking to purchase a brand-new pc for gaming. Instead, I said that intel’s platform or going back a generation for AMD was a better choice simply because the cost of entry was way lower without sacrificing performance. But the main problem with the AM5 platform isn't the CPUs, or the fact that it uses DDR5. It’s just that the motherboards are way too expensive. If you go for the cheapest one, it's this gigabyte DS3H model at 160$. But, it's M-ATX. If you want an ATX board for more PCIe slots, extra Nvme storage, or whatever else, the price jumps to 200$ instantly. With both last gen AMD and Intel, you can find boards for under 100$. In the case of last gen AMD CPUs, way lower than 100. Anyways, so why am I bringing this up? Well, a new leak is going around that if true, would drop the price of entry by quite a lot! This information comes from Twitter leaker “Chilled “ dog and it says that AMD will release 3 new non-X sku’s. The Ryzen 5 7600, ryzen 7 7700 and ryzen 9 7900. As is, the main difference between these non-X models and their X counterpart is the clock speeds and also likely the TDPs. The 7600 and 7700 would probably go from 105 watts down to 65, and the Ryzen 9 models would go from a TDP of 170 watts down to 105. I'm just speculating here though. According to a USB-IF filing Threadripper might come out with 3 different chipsets. Surprisingly, AMD is finally moving away from the whole 99 naming scheme, that way there would be no more confusion with Intel products. Instead, we could get 3 chipsets called TRX40, TRX80, and WRX80. TRX40 was confirmed by sources at Asus who spoke with videocards.com. At least 2 motherboards are in the works for Asus, the Prime TRX40 Pro and the ROG Strix TRX40-E gaming. It’s unclear why there are 3 chipsets available but here the likely reasons. Those are pretty much just speculation. One of the options could be that TRX40 could support quad-channel memory, just like X399. and both TRX80 and wrx80 could, as the name suggests, bump that up to 8 channel memory support. Some also speculate that the 80 versions would support higher than 32 cores but I doubt AMD would put such an arbitrary limit between brand new chipsets they would release at the same time. Another option to separate the 3 is that WRX boards would support dual sockets for Threadripper, and while I really don't think it's going to happen, it's a possibility. Now I know what you’re going to say, That would deeply cannibalize the Epyc Rome CPU’s. But I don't think so. AMD has so much more in EPYC for the server market to differentiate it. There's the 128 lanes of PCIe, there are more layers of security, and more importantly, especially for the server market, there’s 24/7 AMD support. There’s a lot more than just cores to differentiate a server, from an enthusiast product. I guess we’ll have to wait until AMD’s next events to see any development. Right now, they have one event scheduled for IBC 2019 in about 2 weeks and another one a week after that at the Strata data conference.
