In the second programme of the series, Doris Langley Moore looks at impracticality in fashionable clothing and how it has been popular throughout history. Impractical, ornate clothes signified a person of leisure who took no part in manual labour. This particular fashion imperative was turned on its head, of course, with the arrival of the Swinging 60s and the democratisation of fashion brought about by people such as Twiggy and Mary Quant.
Famous faces to watch out for in this episode include actress Vanessa Redgrave and her mother Rachel Kempson, actor Ron Moody - famous for his role as Fagin in the film version of 'Oliver' - Dora Bryan, stalwart of British cinema throughout the 1940s and 1950s - and the celebrated stage actress Irene Worth.

SYNOPSIS
This pilot for a live arts discussion programme was never broadcast, although the series that followed ran for over 130 editions. In this excerpt, Julian Jebb interviews Francis Bacon about his contemporaries in the art world, his working practices and his personal philosophies, such as his belief that true abstract painting is nothing more than 'lyrical, charming and decorative'.
DID YOU KNOW?
As was common at the time, this interview concludes with both participants reaching for their cigarettes. Having cigarettes, and occasionally alcohol, on hand for intimate discussions such as this was thought to be a good way to get the guests to relax. In this interview, Bacon references a piece he wrote about Matthew Smith for a 1953 Tate exhibition of Smith's work. He claimed at the time that Smith's art made 'a direct assault upon the nervous system' and cited him as an influence on his own work.

This inaugural edition of 'Tomorrow's World' includes three very different features. Derek Cooper, with help from consultant physician Dr Charles Fletcher, investigates new advances in kidney dialysis machines designed to work in the home and follows the range of opinions about this development. A second report looks at a Dutch flood defence system that has inspired plans in the UK to help ease a shortage of fresh water, while Professor Philip Morrison discusses the likelihood of the Mariner 4 space probe discovering evidence of life on Mars.

'Tomorrow's World' was devised by Glyn Jones. First broadcast on 7 July 1965, it was planned as an initial run of six programmes under the collective subtitle 'In the Making Today'. The transmission of this first edition was scheduled between Welsh sitcom 'Lil' and the 'Miss Interflora/GPO 1965' beauty pageant. The theme tune for the first six episodes was composed by Marius Constant, but when the series returned later the same year, it featured a distinctive new theme composed by Johnny Dankworth.
