Humanity is a dominant presence in the Exeter Book riddle collection. It is frequently shown using, shaping and binding the physical world in which it lives. The riddles depict master and craftsman and use the familiar human world as a point of orientation within a vast, overwhelming cosmos. But the riddles also offer an eco-centric perspective, one that considers the natural origins of man-made products and the personal plight of useful human resources. This study offers fresh insights into the collection, investigating humanitys interaction with, and attitudes towards, the rest of the created world. Drawing on the principles of eco-criticism and eco-theology, the study considers the cultural and biblical influences on the depiction of nature in the collection, arguing that the texts engage with post-lapsarian issues of exploitation, suffering and mastery. Depictions of marginalised perspectives of sentient and non-sentient beings, such as trees, ore and oxen, are not just characteristic of the riddle genre, but are actively used to explore the point of view of the natural world and the impact humanity has on its non-human inhabitants. The author not only explores the riddles resistance to anthropocentrism, but challenges our own tendency to read these enigmas from a human-centred perspective. Corinne Dale gained her PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London.

What is the work of art? How does art work as art? Andrew Benjamin contends that the only way to address these questions is by developing a radically new materialist philosophy of art, and by rethinking the history of art from within that perspective. A materialist philosophy of art starts with the contention that meaning is only ever the after effect of the way in which materials work. Starting with the relation between history, materials and work (arts work), this book opens up a highly original reconfiguration of the philosophy of art. Benjamin undertakes a major project that seeks to develop a set of complex interarticulations between art history and an approach to arts work that emphasizes arts material presence. A philosophy of art emerges from the limitations of aesthetics.**ReviewAnimated by a very real philosophical imagination and informed by an impressive knowledge of the history of art, Andrew Benjamins Arts Philosophical Work engages and illuminates the fascinating questions that arise when philosophizing confronts the strange material and historical presence at work in art. This is a significant work, full of insight and originality. (Dennis J. Schmidt, University of Western Sydney) Andrew Benjamins new book opens a new philosophical space for understanding the ways art matters. Situating his inquiry in the relational and historical nature of the work of art, Benjamin offers consistently original interpretations of key paintings and sculptures and their relation to the long historiography of the history of art. His account is lucid, wide-ranging and innovative as well as constantly affectionate about the object of his exploration. (Jas Elsner, Professor of Art History, University of Oxford and University of Chicago) This book puts art to work as a fine attention to the artworks particular qualities gives rise to an exciting investigation of the processes of the artworks coming into relation, the book shows how art history can be productively included in philosophical thought and how the consideration of arts history can expand philosophy. This is the first comprehensive and accessible survey in English of Old Norse eddic poetry a remarkable body of literature rooted in the Viking Age, which is a critical source for the study of early Scandinavian myths, poetics, culture and society. Dramatically recreating the voices of the legendary past, eddic poems distil moments of high emotion as human heroes and supernatural beings alike grapple with betrayal, loyalty, mortality and love. These poems relate the most famous deeds of gods such as Oinn and orr with their adversaries the giants they bring to life the often fraught interactions between kings, queens and heroes as well as their encounters with valkyries, elves, dragons and dwarfs. Written by leading international scholars, the chapters in this volume showcase the poetic riches of the eddic corpus, and reveal its relevance to the history of poetics, gender studies, pre-Christian religions, art history and archaeology. **

Although the use of data mining for security and malware detection is quickly on the rise, most books on the subject provide high-level theoretical discussions to the near exclusion of the practical aspects. Breaking the mold, Data Mining Tools for Malware Detection provides a step-by-step breakdown of how to develop data mining tools for malware detection. Integrating theory with practical techniques and experimental results, it focuses on malware detection applications for email worms, malicious code, remote exploits, and botnets. The authors describe the systems they have designed and developed email worm detection using data mining, a scalable multi-level feature extraction technique to detect malicious executables, detecting remote exploits using data mining, and flow-based identification of botnet traffic by mining multiple log files. For each of these tools, they detail the system architecture, algorithms, performance results, and limitations. Discusses data mining for emerging applications, including adaptable malware detection, insider threat detection, firewall policy analysis, and real-time data mining Includes four appendices that provide a firm foundation in data management, secure systems, and the semantic web Describes the authors tools for stream data mining From algorithms to experimental results, this is one of the few books that will be equally valuable to those in industry, government, and academia. It will help technologists decide which tools to select for specific applications, managers will learn how to determine whether or not to proceed with a data mining project, and developers will find innovative alternative designs for a range of applications.

When we think of folk music, most of us picture Pete Seeger singing This Land is My Land or Joan Baez singing Barbara Allen. But this stimulating Very Short Introduction throws open the doors on a remarkably diverse musical genre, in a wide-ranging portrait that goes far beyond Americas shores to discuss folk music of every possible kind and in every corner of the globe. Written by award-winning musicologist Mark Slobin, this is the first compact introduction to folk music that offers a truly global perspective. Slobin offers an extraordinarily generous portrait of folk music, one that embraces a Russian wedding near the Arctic Circle, a group song in a small rainforest village in Brazil, and an Uzbek dance tune in Afghanistan. He looks in detail at three poignant songs from three widely separated regions--northern Afghanistan, Jewish Eastern Europe, and the Anglo-American world--with musical notation and lyrics included. And he also describes the efforts of scholars who fanned out across the globe, to find and document this ever-changing music.

Translated from the French, this book analyzes the paradoxes that fundamentally characterize Nietzsches philosophy and texts. Newly translated into English, this book analyzes the paradoxical discourse that flows through and fundamentally characterizes Nietzsches writings. Examining Nietzsches The Birth of Tragedy Human, All Too Human Beyond Good and Evil On the Genealogy of Morals and The Antichrist Rogerio**** Miranda de Almeida patiently opens these texts to the multiplicity of truths that unfold through the process of continuous reinterpretation and reevaluation. Never formally defining the contradictions within Nietzsches conception of metaphysics, religion, art, science, and philosophy, Miranda de Almeida acknowledges instead that the history of thought, and the development of Nietzsches writings in particular, is an interplay of forces and drives, encroachment and surrender, construction and destruction, overcoming and transformation, lack and fulfillment, satisfaction and dissatisfaction, pleasure and displeasure, pain and delight. This book reveals the endless perspectives and truths that Nietzsche creates and transforms. Drawing on the broad tradition of the French Nietzsche, this book offers a rich tapestry of reflections on the multiplicitiesstill to be mined in Nietzsches thought, including the aesthetics of art and appearance, on woman and dissimulation, as well as morality, religion, and, of course, paradox. Babette E. Babich, author of Words in Blood, Like Flowers Philosophy and Poetry, Music and Eros in Holderlin, Nietzsche, and Heidegger From texts prior to The Birth of Tragedy through the final works of 1888, Miranda de Almeida dramatically draws out the tensions, torsions, and the dynamics of Nietzsches theoretical development. In remarkably clear terms, he explains how, for Nietzsche, the whole subsoil of concepts and values are orchestrated by drives and needswhether they be fictive or realand shows how this results in the unique character of his ever-changing appreciation of the cultural symbolic. David B. Allison, author of Reading the New Nietzsche The Birth of Tragedy, The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and On the Genealogy of Morals**
