It finally happened - the day we’ve all waited for...LEO WENT INTO THE NEW ENCLOSURE! Ha! Susan said she looked up and almost dropped the stuff she was carrying...there was Leo wandering around checking out the new enclosure like he owned the place. As you know we never force the bears to do anything..they are not trained or circus animals, so we never forced him to check out the new enclosure but it was a bummer that we built this new, huge, beautiful enclosure and he would not even step foot in it. But the moment has finally arrived. MONTHS later, Leo has decided it is safe to check out. Go Leo! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1-maHcfP1k
The possum babies are now big enough to be moved to the next level of their rehabilitation. The outdoor area. This area has many climbing things for them and other items for them to explore and investigate and build muscle and dexterity. Susan will also cover the ground in there with leaf litter so that they can hunt for bugs and other things in the leaf debris. Once they are a little more adept at climbing and fending for themselves, she will do a soft release. A soft release basically means leaving the door open and continuing to feed them for a little while, until they stop coming back. That usually takes less than a week before they are self sufficient and no longer return to the enclosure.

When Susan first sent me this video, I watched it with a smile. It was so cute - and the bears are always so adorable. Then I got to thinking what a great life they have here. They can't be free in the wild, that's true, but they actually get things here they couldnt have there. So if they cant be wild, this sure is a great alternative.
In the wild bears live a solitary life. Except for mating, or cub raising, bears are alone. The competition for mates, territory, and food dont allow them safe interactions with other bears, or leisure time, or the ability to just play carefree with another bear, as they did when they were young cubs. But here, even though they are in their late teens, they have the ability to do all of that. Play like this, sleep cuddled up in a huge heap-o-bear, or have alone-time if they want it.
I'm proud to work with Susan and Jim and the Orphaned Wildlide Center, and videos like this make me smile and truly realize how much they have done for the lives of these bears. Because no one could possibly dispute that these are very happy bears. So if you can't be wild and free, then perhaps this is truly the next best thing.
The Covid-19 crisis has caused us to lose many of our monthly sponsors. We thank every single one of you for all the months you helped support all the animals here, and we recognize that this is an extremely difficult, complicated, and uncertain financial time for everyone. So first - THANK YOU for the help you have given us for however long you were able. And if anyone out there is still ok and would like to help us going forward, our biggest need is always monthly sponsors. Monthly income we can count on no matter what expense, or emergency, or need crops up. You can sign up from our website at Http://www.orphanedwildlife.org/donate. If you can't, we get it, but perhaps you could help spread the word by sharing this post, or our page in general, or any of our videos. Thank you all for the love!

It looks like Ms. Squeaky has given up motherhood. She has not had any babies since last fall. She had her first litter when she was just one years old. She had a total of four litters one right after the other. A total of 13 babies in all!

We also released a whole bunch of rabbits this week! Rabbits can be so very fragile, but Susan is amazing at saving their lives.

Rest In Peace Jimbo. 24 years...was not enough.
It is with tremendous sorrow, and unbelievable grief that we have to tell you that on Tuesday morning, we were forced to say goodbye to our beloved Jimbo.
He had been very sick for the past few weeks and we tried everything to help him. But in the end, his liver cancer could not be beat back, and it took over his quality of life and eventually it took this amazing, precious, wonderful bear that we called family. Jim and Susan were by his side the entire time.
To say that we are all heartbroken, would be an understatement. Jim and Susan especially. They are bereft, they are numb, their hearts are destroyed and they are just broken.
Please give us some time to mourn before we post more. We know that so many of you have followed us for a long time and also were in love with this very special bear. Because TRULY, he was special. He was unique....he was...incredible. Rest In Peace you big, wonderful, boy. You simply could not have been loved more on this earth Jimbo. We will miss you every day for the rest of our days.
