I didn't think anyone would want to sit through a talky tutorial so I just sped it all up. If you want more detail on any part of the process leave a comment and I will elaborate. Thank you for watching. These will be for sale in my Etsy shop at some point when I get off my butt and post them.
Tools & Materials (not affiliate links)
*30mm glass cabochons (This Amazon vendor packages them well): https://a.co/d/dupWSh9
*18mm round microscope slides (You can get them cheaper on AliExpress): https://a.co/d/2OHxLWb
*Judkins Diamond glaze (This stuff works great but seriously WHY NO FRIKKIN' CAP JUDKINS): https://a.co/d/a3O3y8F
*Fine detail brushes: https://a.co/d/hAsU4yh
*Glass paint: https://a.co/d/2gvUMsp
*Colored foil flakes: https://a.co/d/3YNicdC
*Dotting tools: https://a.co/d/6MrLu9y
*Reusable adhesive putty: https://a.co/d/cr1rveb
Other Tools/Materials
*An oven (I use a toaster oven)
*Latex gloves
*Microfiber cloth
*Fine tip tweezers (plastic is better)
*Q-tips
*Isopropyl alcohol or glass cleaner
*Short dowel sections
*Painter's tape
*A hole punch
*Wax Paper/Baking Parchment
*Exacto knife
Steps
1) Make pupil masks. Back painter's tape with wax paper (to keep from sticking in hole punch.) Punch holes. Use these as masks for the pupil.
2) Clean microscope slides with alcohol and Q-tips.These say they're precleaned but might as well. Handle these with gloves to keep from getting fingerprints on them. Be careful, they're wafer-thin!
3) Apply pupil mask. Rub down carefully. Again, these are super fragile. I work on paper towels or felt for cushioning.
4) Mount on sticks, mask side up, using sticky-tac. This will make it easier to paint and dry them. I made a little stand to hold my sticks using a piece of wood with holes drilled in it.
5) Apply thin layers of paint, letting it dry between coats. I've experimented with using a hair-dryer or heat gun (on low) to speed the drying but you don't really need to, if you keep the paint layers thin. I tend to start with dots in center, then add darker paint around the edges and use a fine brush to pull lines in toward the center. Whatever you put down first will be most visible from the front (the first layer), so I start with gold so I get the shine. Backing with foil creates sparkle and dimension, so when you're painting leave some spaces open. Or you can paint completely for more natural look. Try not to paint over the tape completely because you will have to remove the mask and the paint won't come away clean.
6) Let dry completely. I use my food dehydrator to dry these more quickly.
7) Carefully remove pupil mask. May have to cut around paint to keep it from peeling off. This is a step in the process where breakage is likely to happen so be careful.
8) Apply pupil to paint side with dotter or Q-tip. You can do this first with dotter (instead of using a tape mask) but I like how the dotter gives it a more natural look, because some of the iris color is in front of the black pupil.
9) Let dry again.
10) Bake to set glass paint, according to the directions on whatever glass paint you use.
11) Clean carefully with alcohol and Q-tip
12) Apply foil backing, using diamond glaze as an adhesive.
13) Let dry completely. NOTE: Do NOT bake after you use diamond glaze, as diamond glaze doesn't respond well to high heat. It turns brown and crackly.
14) Clean up foil edges, carefully. Remove glue from face if necessary but be careful. You can also seal the backs of the irises with clear varnish if you want to add an extra step (and more durability)
15) Clean cabs with alcohol and microfiber cloth
16) Glue the irises to the cabs, smooth sides together. You want some glue squeeze out but whatever glue squeezes out you will have to scrape off and that is another situation where you might crack the delicate irises. Fun times.
17) Once again, let dry completely.
18) Clean up glue squeeze-out around the irises. Carefully.
19) Clean eyeball with alcohol
20) Done! Use in jewelry or a craft piece.
