Boom pole cleaning and maintenance is something that there's little info about on the websites of the manufacturers themselves. This is not because they want you to destroy your poles so you have to buy replacements but because most sound professionals have tricks they use for cleaning and maintaining their own boom poles. In this video, I'll go over my tips.
Note: Many of the great techniques I've learned were first taught to me from the amazing boom operator Doug Cameron. Much love to you bro!
If you have tricks that you use for maintaining your own boompoles, please write them in the comments below!

Welcome to the twenty seventh episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. In this episode I'm going to discuss why boom operators should always monitor sound on set. Some people still don't believe that anyone other than a sound mixer needs to wear headphones. For the second topic we're going to cover some of the things you need to be aware of when picking out or deciding if you're going to use wind protection on your boom mics. Enjoy.

Deity Microphones released an astounding number of products in it's first 2 years and amongst them are 5 lavalier microphones. The Deity V.Lav (Video Lav) and the Connect Lav included in the Deity Connect Wireless Kits are practically the same so I'm calling them the same thing in this video. There's also the W.Lav (Wireless Lav), W.Lav Pro and W.Lav Micro. Most channels on YouTube do one or two tests when comparing lavs but I'll challenge you to find another resource anywhere on the internet that compares all of Deity's Lavalier microphones as thoroughly.
Because this video is nearly 43 minutes long, I'm including time stamps below so you can zap around to whatever tests you're most curious about or quickly get back to parts you want to listen to again. If interested in purchasing any Deity product mentioned in this video, please consider using one of the affiliate links below. You'll pay the same price but I'll receive a small referral fee.
Update: 16 hours and 36 minutes after this video went LIVE, Deity contacted me to inform me that they're switching the duct tape included with the W.Lavs to a hypoallergenic medical tape. This is a win!

Since starting Sound Speeds I've been asked many times why I started Sound Speeds. What does Sound Speeds mean? Why do I do my videos in a booth looking environment? In this video, I'll address all of that and much more.
I'm very aware that this video may bore some but I try to keep it interesting. In this video I share a clip of the first ever video test I did for Sound Speeds and you quickly realize why I chose not to do my videos like that. I share a few things that helped me when I started Sound Speeds and even talk a bit about what I'm going to be doing on this channel in the future. If sitting at your computer watching me tell my story isn't something you can handle, maybe listen to this one while doing the dishes, driving to work or on a jog. I hope you enjoy!

------------------------------------------ NOTE: ------------------------------------------
In this video I say you don't need to have a microphone in your face and that it looks dumb to me. To clarify, if you're doing a YouTube video specifically about a particular voice-over mic or have a reason for it, that's fine but if you are doing a general sound video (like I often do) or are doing a video about a different topic, having a microphone in your face doesn't make sense to me at all.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
It's come to my attention that Synco or a marketing company for Synco may have sent out post cards to people that have purchased the Mic-D2 offering to pay for a 5 star review with either another mic or a $40 payback. I'm looking into this but if I learn this is true, I'll not be recommending anyone buy this mic for any reason due to shady business practices. In the mean time, tread lightly in the reviews section on Amazon just in case. For evidence of what I'm saying, check out this tweet: https://twitter.com/podcastage/status/1210651751612764160?s=19
Not long ago I was sent an email asking me if I would like to test out a budget option for the Sennheiser MKH-416. I thought about it and decided I would so in this review I'm extensively testing the Synco Mic-D2 short shotgun microphone.
Many YouTube channels review products. Some read out specs and give someone else's opinion as their own while others do a simple voice-over test but you won't find that here. My style is to extensively test the mic meaning that I test it in many different capacities and in this video you'll see just that testing.
Buy some Sound Speeds swag! https://teespring.com/stores/sound-speeds-swag
ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTE: I'm not subtle about my feelings towards the included windscreen but because it's part of the mic kit, I tested it with the mic. Truth be known I strongly believe the windscreen may dissuade people from wanting to buy a Synco Mic-D2 if they are considering it but I'd like to direct those people back to the comparisons without windscreens at the beginning of the testing.

Welcome to the thirty third episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. Some sound mixers want you to using the best mic for a scene even if that means switching mics over and over again until half the scene is done. Some mixers won't let you switch mics. Back in the 1990's I was using power cables as speaker cable. Did it work? Well...

On February 18, 2021 the Mars Rover Perseverance landed safely on the red planet. Unlike other rovers before it, the Perseverance was equipped with two microphones. Although audio had been recorded on the NASA Mars rover InSight previously, the Perseverance's two highly detailed and accurate DPA microphones are on board bringing us sound from another world. In this video we'll discuss the ears aboard the Perseverance.

In another video I showed you how to switch sides with the boom pole extended and in the spirit of happy boom technique training, I'm going to show you the technique I developed to rotate my leading hand 180 degress while keeping two points of contact on the pole at all times. In fairness, someone else may have developed this first but I was never taught this technique; I figured out a way to do it myself so I'll claim personal credit if nothing more.
Going from high to low with a boom pole can put muscles into awkward positions but using this technique you can cut down on the discomfort by shifting into another position. I highly suggest practicing this technique until you have it down smoothly so you don't drop the boom or twist yourself into a position causing you to lose control.
Note: It was my intention to share the handling noise inside the pole while switching hand positions but when I moved to the back of the house to avoid a leave blower out front, I forgot to hit record again on the bottom of the boom pole. Honest mistake and I'll own it. The handling noise is slightly less than when you palm the boom and spin it around. his is because less of your hands are touching the boom and most of the noise you hear is gentle taping on the boom. Time a switch for when the person you're booming isn't talking and you'll face no issues.
