Dopapod takes dark, angular dance music and translates it to an organ funk group in “Dracula’s Monk.” The Color Red version of the song finds the group fleshing the song out with the initial melody on organ as opposed to synths like they have performed the track in the past. This fresh take also features a robust jam at the end featuring the tasteful, funky guitar work of Rob Compa. Fans of the group will enjoy hearing the track in a whole new light while those new to Dopapod will be delighted with a track that appeals to fans of MMW & Squarepusher alike.

The Pulsations summon the deep pocket in “Black River.” Spurred from a group writing session, the drum and bass groove pave the way for interlocking guitar parts and a topsy-turvy horn line. The group found inspiration in the cataclysmic nature of the Black River that fed Lake Washington in the Seattle area. The river was inadvertently drained when a canal was constructed from the Puget Sound to Lake Washington. The dried-up river caused a catastrophic loss of a resource that affected local farmers, the salmon population, and Native tribes who still lived alongside the river. It beckons the reality of the inevitable briefness in all facets of life and thusly, “you gotta dig it while it’s happening.”
Artist Quote: "West Seattle Soul Presents: The Pulsations is an oozing collaboration of 13-15 Seattle hot shots crammed into a raw, close quarters performance that is blatant and obscure. It's an accidentally defying, thoroughly enjoyable, relapse of Seattle funk." - Oli Klomp

“Saved by the Bell” is an energetic slice of funky piano laced with New Orleans vibes and an icing of percussive cake. More dancefloor-driven than the prior two releases on Color Red, Joe Tatton wanted to feature long-time New Mastersounds collaborator, Sam Bell on percussion to round out the sound and impart a swaggering boogaloo vibe. This contrasts the two prior releases on Color Red that were more introspective and is a perfect capstone to the series to highlight Tatton’s versatility ranging from acoustic piano trios over red wine to raging night clubs ushering in the daylight.

Annie J’s “Change” was born from a desire to rediscover and relive moments and feelings from the past. The mid-tempo pop-soul track presents the perfect platform to showcase Annie’s sparkling voice and colorful style accentuated by an eclectic roster of fellow Seattle collaborators that include Andrew Vait, Emily Westman, Scott Paul Johnson, David Dawda. Her reflective lyrics examine the pain of past mistakes or losing loved ones and the ability they have to act as a catalyst for change that polarizes feelings of joy and sorrow alike. “Change” is the second single off of Annie J’s debut solo album ‘Get Back,’ coming out on Color Red in spring 2022. While Annie has garnered critical acclaim for her work in the vocal booth and sharing the stage with other established acts, ‘Get Back’ finds her lighting her own fire to step into her own with a stunning 6-track collection of polished, yet grounded and retro-inspired tunes.

Ciutadella de Menorca is a port city on the west coast of Menorca (Minorca), one of the Spanish Balearic Islands. It’s known for its old quarter and medieval streets. Joe Tatton has travelled to this Mediterranean paradise often to visit his friend and bandmate in the New Mastersounds, Bassist Pete Shand, who resides on the island.

In the second edition of The New Mastersounds’ “A Brighter Day,” the group collaborated with Adryon de Leon (Orgōne, Matador! Soul Sounds) to contribute lyrics and vocals to the instrumental arrangement crafted by Eddie Roberts. De Leon wrote the lyrics during the height of the winter wave of COVID-19 shut downs in 2020 and imagined a bright, sunny day surrounded by loved ones. “A Brighter Day” also serves as a reminder to check in on even the strongest people in your lives as it was a dark, and lonely time in our world’s history. The end result is in the style of School House Rock meets Minnie Ripperton and will have listeners truly reveling in the brighter days that have been cast upon us.

"Trouble" - The New Mastersounds ft. Lamar Williams Jr.
Eddie Roberts (guitarist and bandleader of The New Mastersounds/founder of Color Red) first met Lamar Williams Jr. at a benefit show in Denver, CO in early 2018 coordinated by Peter Levin (keyboardist in The Gregg Allman Band). They connected instantly, both musically and interpersonally and when The New Mastersounds passed through Atlanta 3 months later, Williams enthusiastically joined the quartet for 3 songs and cultivated seeds of a long-lasting musical relationship.
“Trouble” is a testament to this fortified musical bond. Recorded in November 2018, The New Mastersounds laid a silky pad of rhythmic precision allowing Williams to float on top with his assured, yet demure vocals and John Macy’s hypnotic lap steel lines. Collaborations like this epitomize Roberts’ vision when founding Color Red as a platform for musical compatriots to document all-original music.
“In general, the song inspiration came from how I think people perceive each other without giving love a chance for them to learn and lend their abilities to each unique situation,” Williams explains.
