This book proposes a groundbreaking approach to the study of personal creativity, linking this to the analysis of thechakras, or centers of energy, of the subtle system suggested by the Eastern philosophy called Sahaja Yoga. It arguesthat creativity is to be re-learnt through a process of self-review, a self-examination which is underpinned by the authors concept of the outsider to the self, a pervasive condition characterized by a tendency to be connected to the outer world at the expenseof the inner world. The author analyses creativity from three different but interrelated aspects the individual, society and education - and maps out a route that may take the individuals into an understanding of blockages in their creative process. It also examines aspects that have contributed to sustain the condition of the outsider to the self, hindering peoples creativity. It argues that the traditional education system is both constricting and releasing factor of creativity. Finally, through the use of auto-ethnography, the author reveals a process of blocked and unblocked creativity. This book is a key read for all those interestedinpsychology, sociology, education and cultural studies. **From the Back Cover This book proposes a groundbreaking approach to the study of personal creativity, linking this to the analysis of the chakras, or centers of energy, of the subtle system suggested by the Eastern philosophy called Sahaja Yoga. div id=iframeContent dir=autoElusive Belonging examines the post-migration experiences of Filipina marriage immigrants in rural South Korea. Marriage migrationcrossing national borders for marriagehas attracted significant public and scholarly attention, especially in new destination countries, which grapple with how to integrate marriage migrants and their children and what that integration means for citizenship boundaries and a once-homogenous national identity. In the early twenty-first century many Filipina marriage immigrants arrived in South Korea under the auspices of the Unification Church, which has long served as an institutional matchmaker.Based on ethnographic fieldwork, Elusive Belonging examines Filipinas who married rural South Korean bachelors in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Turning away from the common stereotype of Filipinas as victims of domestic violence at the mercy of husbands and in-laws, Minjeong Kim provides a nuanced understanding of both the conflicts and emotional attachments of their relationships with marital families and communities. Her close-up accounts of the day-to-day operations of the states multicultural policies and public programs show intimate relationships between Filipinas, South Korean husbands, in-laws, and multicultural agents, and how various emotions of love, care, anxiety, and gratitude affect immigrant womens fragmented citizenship and elusive sense of belonging to their new country. By offering the perspectives of varied actors, the book reveals how womens experiences of tension and marginalization are not generated within the family alone they also reflect the socioeconomic conditions of rural Korea and the states unbalanced approach to multiculturalism. Against a backdrop of the South Korean governments multicultural policies and projects aimed at integrating marriage immigrants, Elusive Belonging attends to the emotional aspects of citizenship rooted in a sense of belonging. It mediates between a critique of the assimilation inherent in Koreas multiculturalism and the contention that the countrys core identity is shifting from ethnic homogeneity to multiethnic diversity. In the process it shows how marriage immigrants are incorporated into the fabric of Korean society even as they construct new identities as Filipinas in South Korea.

We are born, live, and die with technologies. This book is about the role technology plays in sustaining narratives of living, dying, and coming to be. Contributing authors examine how technologies connect, disrupt, or help us reorganize ways of parenting and nurturing life. They further consider how technology sustains our ways of thinking and being, hopefully reconciling the distance between who we are and who we aspire to be. Finally, they address the role technology plays in helping us come to terms with death, looking at technologically enhanced memorials, online rituals of mourning, and patterns of grief enabled through technology. Ultimately, this volume is about using technology to reimagine the art of life. **

Vodka is the most versatile of spirits. While people in Eastern Europe and the Baltic often drink it neat, swallowing it in one gulp, others use it in cocktails and mixed drinksbloody marys, screwdrivers, white russians, and Jell-O shotsor mix it with tonic water or ginger beer to create a refreshing drink. Vodka manufacturers even infuse it with flavors ranging from lemon and strawberry to chocolate, bubble gum, and bacon. Created by distilling fermented grains, potatoes, beets, or other vegetables, this colorless, tasteless, and odorless liquor has been enjoyed by both the rich and the poor throughout its existence, but it has also endured many obstacles along its way to global popularity. In this book, Patricia Herlihy takes us for a ride through vodkas history, from its mysterious origins in a Slavic country in the fourteenth century to its current transatlantic reign over Europe and North America. She reveals how it continued to flourish despite hurdles like American Prohibition and being banned in Russia on the eve of World War I. On its way to global domination, vodka became ingrained in Eastern European culture, especially in Russia, where standards in vodka production were first set. Illustrated with photographs, paintings, and graphic art, Vodka will catch the eye of any reader intrigued by how potato juice became an international industry.

This Dictionary covers the period from the emergence of the Egyptian state around 3000 BC to the Arab conquest in the mid-7th century AD. The book is divided into three main sections. An introductory section includes a chronology of Egypt, with all known military actions, and an essay highlighting the problems of the surviving evidence and its interpretation, and the major changes in military technology and organization over the period involved. The central section covers a wide range of issues including, pharaohs for whom military activities are documented foreign rulers and countries against whom the Egyptians fought, or who invaded Egypt weapons and military technology major archaeological sites gods and goddesses associated with warfare arms trade literature and social advancement. The third section is a detailed bibliography of the historical phases and archaeological sites, and the broader subject areas covered by the dictionary. There is a series of maps of Egypt and the surrounding regions, and a kinglist with rulers and their dates, and the dynasties and kingdoms to which they are assigned by Egyptologists. This reference is aimed primarily at students and the interested reader. It presumes no detailed knowledge of ancient Egypt. The arrangement of the book as a dictionary means that it can be used on its own as a research tool, or in conjunction with other works, such as histories, or translations of Egyptian texts. The user can find concise definitions and descriptions, and brief accounts of military actions. Through the cross-referencing of each entry, and in conjunction with the bibliography, the user can pursue the wider issues and find more detailed studies.ReviewThe introduction successfully draws the readers attention. But perhaps its greatest contribution is its final section, the selected bibliography, which deserves special recognition for its inclusiveness and organization....Ancient Egyptian Warfare will be most useful to the student, although the excellent further readings section will appeal to the seasoned scholar as well. (Journal Of African History ) About the AuthorRobert George Morkot is currently a Lecturer at the University of Exeter (School of Education and Lifelong Learning), United Kingdom. War is the most important thing in the world, writes Martin van Creveld, one of the worlds best-known experts on military history and strategy. The survival of every country, government, and individual is ultimately dependent on war - or the ability to wage it in self-defence. That is why, though it may come but once in a hundred years, it must be prepared for every day. When it is too late-when the bodies lie stiff and people weep over them-those in charge have failed in their duty. Nevertheless, in spite of the centrality of war to human history and culture, there has for long been no modern attempt to provide a replacement for the classics on war and strategy, Sun Tzus The Art of War, dating from the 5th or 6th century BC, and Carl von Clausewitzs On War, written in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. What is needed is a modern, comprehensive, easy to read and understand theory of war for the 21st century that could serve as a replacement for these classic texts. The purpose of the present book is to provide just such a theory.
