The Second Council of Orange, held in 529 AD, had significant impact on Catholic doctrine. It settled disagreements between Pelagius and Augustine on original sin, the necessity of divine grace for salvation, and the role of human free will. Pelagius and his followers Caelestius and Julian of Eclanum, denied original sin. The council affirmed the Church's teaching on the necessity of grace and the role of free will in cooperation with that grace. The Council's canons also condemned the notion of salvation by human effort alone, emphasizing the indispensability of divine grace as the foundation for human cooperation in attaining salvation. These Canons played a crucial role in clarifying and defending the Church's understanding of salvation and the relationship between grace and free will. It helped to establish a theological framework that continues to shape Catholic doctrine on salvation to this day.
