The System of Professions: An Essay on the Division of Expert Labor
Author: Andrew Abbott File Type: epub In The System of Professions Andrew Abbott explores central questions about the role of professions in modern life Why should there be occupational groups controlling expert knowledge? Where and why did groups such as law and medicine achieve their power? Will professionalism spread throughout the occupational world? While most inquiries in this field study one profession at a time, Abbott here considers the system of professions as a whole. Through comparative and historical study of the professions in nineteenth- and twentieth-century England, France, and America, Abbott builds a general theory of how and why professionals evolve.**

This imaginative study rethinks the nature of theology and its role in universities.ullThe author sketches out a fascinating project using examples from US and UK institutions, whereby theology becomes a transformative force within universities.llImagines what a Christian university, in which all disciplines have been theologized, would look like.llFeeds into discussions about the religious identity of denominationally-linked colleges and universities.llForms part of a wider attempt to imagine a vital public role for theology that enables it to serve both the Church and the wider community.lulReviewDCosta sets out his argument with clarity and skill An important book, relevant not only for discussions about the future of theology in the academy but of religion in public life. (Theology)This is an important book and I hope augurs more interaction between out different Christian educational traditions. (The Gospel and Our Culture)A well argued book DCosta has an invaluable argument on the key place of theology within the life of a faith. (Anvil)A stimulating read Contains absorbing views on a wide range of current issues such as identity, secularization, ethics and politics A timely and relevant challenge for those involved with Church or university theology in todays religiously volatile world. (International Journal of Public Theology) ReviewA powerful and serious theological argument - essential reading for anyone who wants to think seriously about the future of universities in the west, and most especially, in these troubled times, about the relevance of the practice and study of religion to what the west may become.Paul J. Griffiths, University of IllinoisIn this timely work, Gavin DCosta has caught the post-liberalpost-conservative wave sweeping over English-language theology. Picking up on Alisdair MacIntyres suggestion that a pluralism of rival universities would foster real difference better than pluralistic universities, he argues for a strong-case Catholic university. Such a university would require both ecclesial theology and theological religious studies. In this book, DCosta performs both. His treatment of theology, its relation to prayer and exegesis, and its place in the university will energize readers who are tired of the same old theological thing.William L. Portier, University of Dayton

One of the greatest scholars of Chinese and Japanese Buddhist history was Antonino Forte (19402006), who was Director of the Italian School of Oriental (later East Asian) Studies in Kyoto for many years. Professor Fortes approach to Buddhist Studies was like that of a detective attempting to solve a difficult case. He displayed his investigative skills in a series of important projects such as those in which he addressed the riddle of the origins of The Great Cloud Sutra, the mystery of Empress Wus massive tower and astronomical clock, and the case of the Iranian prince held hostage at the Tang court. Few Buddhist historians have dedicated so much attention and energy to reading archaeological reports and even going into the field to carry out onsite investigations as Antonino Forte. The same data-driven spirit informs the chapters in this tome dedicated to Professor Fortes legacy. This volume is unusual in the way that it assembles the research of distinguished scholars from various fields and regions. One of the main themes that runs through Buddhist Transformations and Interactions is that of borders and their crossing. In very concrete ways, the individual chapters look at how Buddhism passed from India to Central Asia and China and Korea, and from China and Korea to Japan. But crossing is not merely geographical, hence cultural and doctrinal transformations and adaptations are also examined closely. Offering a rare and rich assortment of cutting-edge Buddhological research on diverse topics, this study examines topics such as nirvana and maya, sacred sites, monastery origins, biographical writing, sectarianism in China and Japan, funeral rituals, miracle tales and strange stories, architecture, and lineage transmission. An attentive reading of Buddhist Transformations and Interactions will provide readers with a much better appreciation and understanding of East Asian Buddhism. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and students in Asian studies, particularly Buddhist studies, history of religions, the history of East Asian art and archeology, textual analysis, South Asian studies, and LiaoKhitan studies. **

Giordano Bruno was burnt at the stake in Rome in 1600, accused of heresy by the Inquisition. His life took him from Italy to Northern Europe and England, and finally to Venice, where he was arrested. His six dialogues in Italian, today considered a turning point towards the philosophy and science of the modern world, were written during his visit to Elizabethan London. He died refusing to recant views which he defined as philosophical rather than theological, and for which he claimed liberty of expression. The papers in this volume derive from a conference commemorating the 400th anniversary of Brunos death. Some focus on his experience in England, others on the Italian context of his thought and his impact upon others. Together they constitute a major new survey of the range of Brunos philosophical activity, as well as evaluating his use of earlier cultural traditions and his influence on both contemporary and more modern themes and trends.

LTCM was the fund that was too big to fail, the brightest star in the financial world. Built on genius, by legends of Wall Street and two Nobel laureates, it spiralled to ever greater heights, commanding unimaginable wealth. When it fell to earth in September 1998 it shook the world. This is the story of the rise and fall of LTCM and the legends behind it. Dunbar is a former academician and journalist, making him an ideal writer to explore the theoretical origins of LTCM. From the Inside Flap In the story of Long-Term Capital Management the facts speak for themselves. December 1992, former Salomon Brothers Vice-Chairman John Meriwether teams up with two Nobel laureates - Myron Scholes and Robert Merton - together with his team of huge-earning arbitrage traders to found LTCM in both 1995 and 1996 LTCM returns net profits of over 40% in November 1997 LTCM hands back US$2.7 billion excess capital to investors in early 1998 LTCM increased its portfolio of assets to US$130 billion and commanded a derivatives portfolio with a notional value of US$1.25 trillion in AugustSeptember 1998 the total value of assets on the worlds markets declines by US$3 trillion by September 1998 LTCM loses 90% of its value and has to be bailed out to the tune of US$3.6 billion * from September 1998 to the present day, the ripples of this collapse continue to be felt across the globe But try to look behind these bald facts, and the picture becomes shrouded in mystery. The diverse nature of LTCMs trading, which only allowed insiders to know the full picture, has confused many onlookers seeking to piece together the puzzle. It has been described as the equivalent to three blind men standing by an elephant the first grabs the tail and thinks its a snake, the second leans against it and thinks its a wall and the third reaches out to the trunk and believes it to be a branch. In Inventing Money Nicholas Dunbar strips away the shroud of mystery and complexity to tell the complete story of this most public of financial disasters in a captivating and accessible style. Inventing Money is in equal measure the story of the strategy and people behind the collapse of one of the worlds largest hedge funds, an explanation of how the modern world of finance functions and a walk through the historical development of this multi-billion dollar industry.

By unflinchingly charting the intersections of public and personal history, Thrall explores the historical, cultural, and social forces--across time and space--that determine the roles consigned to a mixed-race daughter and her white father. In a vivid series of poems about interracial marriage depicted in the Casta Paintings of Colonial Mexico, Trethewey investigates the philosophical assumptions that underpin Enlightenment notions of taxonomy and classification, exposing the way they encode ideas of race within our collective imagination. While tropes about captivity, bondage, inheritance, and enthrallment permeate the collection, Trethewey, by reflecting on a series of small estrangements from her poet father, comes to an understanding of how, as father and daughter, they are part of the ongoing history of race in America. Thrall not only confirms that Natasha Trethewey is one of our most gifted and necessary poets but that she is also one of our most brilliant and fearless.

Between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries in Europe, not all women fit the stereotype of passive housewife and mother. Many led bold and dynamic lives. In this collection of historical portraits, Maria Teresa Brolis tells the fascinating tales of fashion icons, art clients, businesswomen, saints, healers, lovers, and pilgrims both famous and little known who challenge conventional understandings of the medieval female experience. Drawing on evidence from literary works and archival documents that include letters, chronicles, trials, testimonials, notary registers, contracts, and wills, Brolis pieces together an intricate overview of sixteen womens lives. With zest and compassion, she describes the mysterious visionary Hildegard of Bingen, the cultured Heloisa, the powerful Eleanor of Aquitaine, Saint Clare of Assisi, the rebel Joan of Arc, as well as lesser-known women such as Flora, the penitent moneylender, Bettina the healer, and Belfiore the pilgrim, among others. Following the trajectories and divergences of their lives from wealth to poverty, from conjugal love to the love of community, from the bedroom to life on the streets of Paris, London, Mainz, Rome, and Bergamo, each portrait offers a riveting glimpse into the often complex and surprising world of the medieval woman. Combining the rigour of research with the thrill and empathy of narrative, Stories of Women in the Middle Ages is a provocative investigation into the biographies of sixteen incredible medieval heroines. **About the Author Maria Teresa Brolis is an independent scholar in medieval history. Anatomy of a Civil War demonstrates the destructive nature of war, ranging from the physical to the psychosocial, as well as wars detrimental effects on the environment. Despite such horrific aspects, evidence suggests that civil war is likely to generate multilayered outcomes. To examine the transformative aspects of civil war, Mehmet Gurses draws on an original survey conducted in Turkey, where a Kurdish armed group, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), has been waging an intermittent insurgency for Kurdish self-rule since 1984. Findings from a probability sample of 2,100 individuals randomly selected from three major Kurdish-populated provinces in the eastern part of Turkey, coupled with insights from face-to-face in-depth interviews with dozens of individuals affected by violence, provide evidence for the multifaceted nature of exposure to violence during civil war. Just as the destructive nature of war manifests itself in various forms and shapes, wartime experiences can engender positive attitudes toward women, create a culture of political activism, and develop secular values at the individual level. In addition, wartime experiences seem to robustly predict greater support for political activism. Nonetheless, changes in gender relations and the rise of a secular political culture appear to be primarily shaped by wartime experiences interacting with insurgent ideology. **Review This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the Kurdish conundrum in Turkey. Mehmet Gurses approaches the PKK struggle in Turkey from a fresh and intriguing angle. While describing the terrible results of the war he analyzes its more positive side such as strengthening democratization, empowering Kurdish women, and laying foundations for peace. Ofra Bengio, Tel Aviv University Anatomy of a Civil War is an outstanding contribution in terms of portraying the transformation that the Kurdish society has experienced in the shadow of this war. Guided by theoretical concerns and written by extensive fieldwork and survey material, this book will be one of the reference books in Kurdish studies in the future. Bahar Baser, Coventry University Anatomy of a Civil War provides an original empirical account of how conflict impacted individuals lives and the wider socio-political transformations it has brought about. It is the firstquantitative analysis of the Kurdish conflict in Turkey, which enables the author to formulate more concrete conclusions. Cengiz Gunes, The Open University In a masterful and objective exploration of civil war in Turkey, professor Gurses takes his readers on a fascinating journey through the complex and transformative effects of conflict. While remaining keenly aware of the destructive and painful effects of civil war, professor Gurses also analyzes other changes that such conflicts engender or make possible. With rich qualitative detail and abundant quantitative evidence, Dr. Gurses book offers readers a very clear, accessible means of understanding a fiendishly complex conflict. David Romano, Missouri State University About the Author Mehmet Gurses is Associate Professor of Political Science at Florida Atlantic University.
