Anyone driving a non-compliant vehicle within the expanded zone will be detected and we advise everyone to check whether their vehicle is compliant and to consider the various support that is available to help transition to greener modes of transport.” The spokesperson added: “Unfortunately, our contractors have been subjected to threats and abuse while carrying out their duties so they are advised to record any issues on mobile phones to deescalate conflict and if necessary, record evidence for police investigations. It is due to the unacceptable criminal abuse and intimidating behaviour against them that these contractors have worn face coverings. TfL is working with the police to catch those responsible for vandalism and criminal activity relating to ULEZ and arrests have been made.” In an interview with talk TV, one member of the Blade Runners, who goes by the name Ben, revealed the extent of their campaign and the reasons behind their actions. Despite the risks of imprisonment, the Blade Runners are determined to continue their fight until TFL stops installing the cameras. Ben, a father of three in his 40s, carries out what he calls "unpaid voluntary work" several days a week. Under the cover of darkness, he disables and destroys the number plate recognition devices installed across London. In the Bromley area alone, Ben claims to have caused a near total blackout of enforcement cameras.
