On 6th July 1980, My mate Ger Farrell and I took the trip to Dalymount Park in Dublin to see the late great Bob Marley and The Wailers on their most ambitious Uprising Tour. On June 27th they had played to 120,000 people in Stadio San Siro, Milano and Could You Be Loved was at No 5 in the UK pop charts. For me a couple of stand out moments were, that before the gig soaring from the sound system came a recording of Lee ‘scratch’ Perry/Junior Murvin’s iconic version of Police and Thieves and a pall of marijuana smoke wafted over the excited crowd. It was the first time I heard it, but have loved it ever since. I hadn't realised at the time Junior was on Lead guitar that day with the Wailers.
Once Marley and the Wailers took the stage, the man's charisma and prescence filled the stadium, his great dreads scribing enchanting arcs through the air.
Another stand out moment was when Marley introduced his new song, Old Pirates,, known as Redemption Song, he offered it to us for the suffering of the people of Ireland under oppression, the band left the stage and Bob Marley’s powerful voice and guitar gave us the message which resonates to this day 'Only ourselves can free our minds'
Already ill, Bob Marley died from the progression of his cancer 11 May 1981.
The sound track I have added to the Ken Burns photomantage is a soundboard bootleg of Redemption Song from the Welsh gig a few days later.
This is a rough cut of the video I made in 2024 I have since lost the Premier master. I have sought fair use for the photos from Photographers TP Mac Curtain and Lyn Atherton
