The possibility of the Earth suddenly becoming colder, even in the face of global warming, is higher than most think. Mechanisms that could cause this would be massive volcanic eruptions, asteroid impacts, or most likely of all, Heinrich Events. Heinrich Events are characterized by mass amounts of ice destabilizing in the Arctic Circle, moving south and melting into the Atlantic Ocean. The widespread salinity and temperature changes to the northern oceans alters global heat convection and if sufficient in scale can trigger a 250+ long cooling spell.
