When you look at these verses, you HAVE to look at the chronology of the events with respect to other events. In this case, Jesus FIRST exempted himself and his disciple from giving anything the Caesar, when he asked the disciple if Caesar's children are required to pay temple tax. Of course, the answer was no. But, only as a courtesy, not obligation, did Jesus tell the disciple to catch a fish with a coin in his mouth and give it as tribute. The spirit of the verse is that it IS NOT an obligation. And, that since we are children of Jesus, and therefore exempt, we are under no obligation, just as Caesar's children are under no obligation. LATER, when Jesus was confronted about tax, he said "Give Caesar's thing to Caesar, and God's things to God. He was referring DIRECTLY to the previous miracle about the coin in the fishes mouth, in which NOTHING was owed Caesar, because we fall under Jesus juristiction, NOT Caesar's... And let's not forget, Jesus was accused of forbidding the paying of taxes, by him and his followers, which he did not deny. Altogether, we are under no obligation to pay taxes, unless you are neither a child of Caesar, nor a child Jesus. SO Atheists, you are out of luck. You owe tax. Now, as a courtesy, we can pay tax if we CHOOSE. But, it is always a choice. If you see value in taxes, pay them. So, how does one get out of paying taxes? You can buy land and copyright it. No taxes owed. You live below the poverty line and owe no taxes. You don't buy items that have tax on them, by making things yourself out of nature. Food is not taxed. Even if you pay into Social Security, you get that back at retirement. What I just described is probably how Jesus lived without ever HAVING to pay taxes.
