The noise floor of the room you're recording in will likely play a huge part in the decision to use production sound. Of course if you're recording a voice over or wild lines and the background noise is too high, you might as well record without the mic plugged in. In short, the noise level of the recording environment is directly related to the usability of that sound. In this video I'll explain why.

I was sent this Tonor K380F Wireless microphone for free in exchange for an unbiased and fair review so here it goes. For just under $40, Tonor offers a wireless system capable of delivering audio in three ways, UHF/Bluetooth/FM. Although the user manual is a bit short on the specifications, I was able learn everything I needed to know about the microphone thru experimentation.
For more information about this wireless microphone, click the link below. If you have any questions about this unit, feel free to write them in the comments below.

Welcome to part two of Can a "Bad" mic be EQed to sound "Good"? In the last episode I put you to the test to see if you could identify a cheap microphone that's been EQed to sound completely different. In this video I put a professional voice-over artist to the test to see if he can identify the cheap microphone while listening to the same voice-over clips.
When it came to finding an industry pro that you likely know and respect it was clear that I needed the Booth Junkie himself, Mike DelGaudio. In this video Mike digs in deep into both EQed and completely unprocessed voice-over tracks to try to identify a $17 microphone amongst $400-$500 large diaphragm microphones. Will he successfully identify the cheap mic?

There are few things that are more uncomfortable than wet feet when you're on set. You're probably already exhausted from long days and then have to deal with rain and water while trying to move equipment that doesn't want to move places it doesn't want to go. If you're a boom operator, camera operator or anyone else that has to move during a scene in and/or near water, then you probably work hard to keep your feet dry. Nobody wants blisters and raw achy feet due to prolonged water exposure.
One of the things I've spent a lot of time on is making my job easier whenever possible and keeping my feet wet in any circumstance is very high on my list. In this video I'm going to demonstrate four different things I do to keep my feet dry on set. These are all products I spent my own money on and received no compensation from anyone for putting them in this video.
Below is a list of products I own or use and showed in this video(or similar + variations):
Silicone Shoe/Boot Covers: https://geni.us/SiliconeCovers
Body Glove Water Shoes (Similar To Mine): https://geni.us/BodyGlove1
Body Glove Water Shoes (Better Model): https://geni.us/BodyGlove2
Merrell Moab Water Hiking Shoe (Similar To Mine): https://geni.us/MerrellMoab
Waterfly Waterproof Socks (As Demonstrated): https://geni.us/WaterflySocks
Neos Overshoe Adventurer (Identical to mine): https://geni.us/Neos1

Neos Overshoe Navigator (Insulated For Cold Weather): https://geni.us/Neos3
Neos Overshoe Voyager (Goes Up The Leg Less Than The Villager): https://geni.us/Neos4
Below is a list of alternative options that I haven't tested but am thinking about trying:
Ushth Overshoe (Like Neos but thinner and much cheaper): https://geni.us/UshthCover
Arunner Shoe Cover (Another discount shoe cover similar to Neos): https://geni.us/ArunnerShoeCover

If you've never heard of a long shotgun microphone before then you need to hear what they can do for you! You know what a short shotgun microphone is even if you've only ever heard of them as "shotgun mics" before but a long shotgun mic is a powerful tool you can use to extract audio from far away.
Around the world people have heard of Rode Microphones but few people I've spoken to even knew Rode made the NTG-8 long shotgun microphone. With reach and rejection you have to hear to believe, get ready for an awesome example of what this microphone can do for you.
Rycote is known for having a huge selection of acoustically transparent wind protection options and has such an extensive catalog that there's at least one wind protection option for every shotgun microphone in the world. Even the NTG-8 has it's own special model number of Rycote Windjammer, the WS-11.
In this video I show you exactly why you need a long long shotgun microphone but one thing you might not think about is the fact that you heard no wind hit the microphone. That's because the WS-11 was doing it's job so well, you didn't even think about it.

I do get pretty feisty in this video but for good reason. I recently have been involved with a lot of talks about on set safety and some people, even veterans, don't understand that set safety starts with you! In this video I get direct and occasionally sarcastic while making my point but this is a very important topic and once that I feel very strong about.
I've seen crew members get hurt and die on set and that should never happen but will continue to until everyone learns that safety is everyone's concern. It's very serious and should be taken as such BEFORE something bad happens.
Keep in mind that hindsight is 20/20 and it's better to speak up before something bad happens than to not speak up when you feel you should. If something bad happens, and you saw it about to happen and said nothing, your guilt is something you'll have to live with. It's not worth it.
At one point I get a bit direct when talking about hired fall guys. Let me be clear about this... Studios don't hire people hoping they'll fail and have to take a fall; they hire people to do a job and if they fail, they will be fired. If that person's job is on set safety and they are incapable of keeping things safe, they shouldn't be doing that job. It should also be said that positions like COVID Compliance Officer is just a role tasked with upholding company compliance but that doesn't just fall on their shoulders. Crew are responsible for keeping social distance, wearing a mask correctly, etc therefore they are also responsible.

Ever since starting Sound Speeds I've been asked about plant micing techniques. I've replied to those emails individually in the past but in this video I thought I'd show a few examples of how to hide a plant mic and tricks about hiding them.
Since you have to be very aware of acoustics to successfully hide a plant, I feel it's important to make it known that lav mics aren't always the best tool for the job. I rarely use a lav as a plant and am only doing it in this video because lavs are very common to indie sound teams and videographers.
Recently I reviewed the Deity V.Lav so I decided to use that mic as my plant for two reasons. 1: It is a $50 option everyone can easily get their hands on and use. 2: It will drive home some of my points on acoustics better than professional plant options.

At the cost of an ounce or two, having a quick release on the end of your boompole can make the difference between getting a microphone switched out in time to get your dialogue. There are many different version online ranging from $21 to $137 and each one has advantages over the others. In this video I will showcase 6 shockmounts currently available on the market (at the time of this video). Discontinued and currently unavailable models will not be featured nor will quick releases that are only compatible with one boom pole or cameras.
