We’ve reached the final debut for GM’s new generation of brawny, full-size SUVs. Whether or not the best was saved for last will depend on our first-drive impression coming later this year, but we suspect Cadillac executives would be keen to say as much. The new Escalade made a ritzy debut in Los Angeles – arguably the luxury SUV's home turf where it casually serves a cavalcade of celebrities, musicians, and well-to-do individuals of numerous industries as a luxurious-yet-anonymous transport.

The A110 is ultra-light at only 1080kg kerb weight (excluding options). Its compact size (4178mm long, 1798mm wide and 1252mm high), optimal weight distribution (44% front/ 56% rear) and low centre of gravity are all dedicated to agility – especially on the type of winding mountain road that made Alpine’s reputation back in the 1960s and ‘70s.
The A110 is equipped with a new 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Alpine’s engineers, together with Renault Sport, have customized this engine for Alpine, with specific air intake, turbocharger, exhaust system and engine tune. The engine has a maximum power output of 252hp and maximum torque of 320Nm. Combined with the low kerb weight of only 1080kg, the A110’s excellent power-to-weight ratio of 233hp:tonne enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in only 4.5 seconds.

Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma finds out if the new BMW 5 Series can hold it’s own as a posterchild for the forward march of technology and remain worthy of the title “ultimate driving machine.”
For more BMW 5 Series: https://www.motor1.com/bmw/5-series/
As-tested price: $82,360
BMW circa 2017 is not the same kind of car company that you may have grown up adoring. Though still making successful driving machines, the German automaker has made its biggest strides with technologies that add to the in-cabin user experience, and those that aim towards a future where cars drive and people simply ride along.
The all-new 5 Series is the most recent poster child for this revision of priorities. In 540i trim, this is still an exhilarating sedan to drive when an enthusiast gets behind the wheel (thank god). But sheer weight of new technologies on the car can’t be ignored, and, frankly, it’s things like automatic parking and gesture controlled infotainment systems that are more likely to bring in new buyers.
In this week’s Why Buy? we cover the new 5ers driving chops, of course, but we also dig deep into the latest form of iDrive, autonomous driving features, and all the ones-and-zeros tech that makes the midsize BMW such a compelling luxury competitor. Enjoy the rundown in the video above.
And if you haven’t already, use this as an excuse to subscribe to the Motor1 Youtube channel. We make new videos every week – don’t miss a minute.
