THE APPOINTMENT NONE OF US WILL MISS--Our Lives As Seen By Those Around The Throne of God
THE APPOINTMENT:
This evening each of us has an unavoidable appointment. This appointment should constrain our flesh and motivate our spiritual hearts. The Time of this appointment is the Day of Christ. This time is so important that Paul mentions it not once or twice, but eight different times in the New Testament, and the Apostle John once for a total of nine times.
1. Romans 14:10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
2. 1 Corinthians 1:8 who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
3. 1 Corinthians 5:5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
4. 2 Corinthians 1:14 (as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.
5. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
6. Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
7. Philippians 1:10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,
8. Philippians 2:16 holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. This is the judgment of the church, one of three last day judgments.
9. 1 John 2:28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.
In our text of 2nd Corinthians 5:10, we see several elements of our time before Christ's Throne.
So, it is going to be first of all a very public event: phanerothanai which means more than just to appear, it means to make manifest. Before the God of the universe and all of creation, we will be made known before all. And bema is the judgment seat of the rulers of old. It is raised for all to see. That is the place all will appear one by one.
Secondly, it is also a very personal event heskaton [plural] must appear in order that each one individually which is the literal meaning of ‘may receive’. Our lives amount to either good or phaulon translated bad does not speak of evil but ‘good for nothingness’ The believer is either going to have to answer for the good things done faithfully for the Master, or for the rest which was good for nothingness. This is ‘light, unstable, blown about by every wind’. Oh, to stand before all in that day and to answer to Him.

God’s Final Written Communication with Humans
The Book of the Revelation is unique. These 404 verses were sent to the Earth by God the Father, through His Son: the Lord Jesus Christ. Those final written words are part of the Holy Scriptures, inspired by God, sent through His Prophets and Apostles, to us who hear His voice.
The flow of Revelation is simple to see.
• Chapter 1 is Jesus Christ showing Himself in all His glory, like the Sun’s blazing light, as God the Son.
• Chapters 2 and 3 are His personal letters to the churches that bear His Name.
• Chapters 4 and 5 are His guided tour of the Throne Room of God Almighty.
• Revelation 6-19 is the Return of the King
All of human history, since the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, has been hurtling towards this moment, when the Creator and King of the Universe comes back to set things in order.
For thousands of years sin has run rampantly throughout the earth and the universe. Satan and his evil angels have done all they could do to thwart and disrupt the knowledge of God. Evil and misery have festered. Sin has permeated every part of human history. Death has taken every human but two.
But finally, the Lord says enough and starts the inexorable conquest back of sin’s reign and Satan’s rebellion. There is probably no part of Scripture more relevant to our times than this one. No portion of Scripture better frames the way we should see global events than this one. We are in the timeliest, most cutting edge truths of God's Word as we enter these chapters.
First of all, how can we summarize this section? Every part of these chapters is somehow connected to Christ's Second Coming as King of the Earth and Creator of All. But with so many chapters before us, what is a framework that can help us? Here is a thumbnail view of these 14 chapters:

Apart from God’s intervention, we all face gradual decay and disease, and ultimate death…
But wait—God has good news…GOD’S GOOD NEWS IS THE RAPTURE –
“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven, with a war cry and the voice of the archangel and with the trump of God, and the dead in Christ will first arise. Thereafter we who live and remain over will at the same time as they be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we will be at all times with the Lord” (I Thess. 4:16, 17).
THE RAPTURE: A promise or rescue from God’s wrath on earth: It is a catching “away,” a taking out of all distress of soul and body. (II Cor. 5:2,4; Phil. 3:21), out of all persecution and oppression by the foe, out of the entire sphere of sin (comp. Rom. 6:6) and of death (Rom. 7:24). Thus it is rest with all saints (II Thess. 1:7) in “the day of the (coming) redemption” (Eph. 4:30: Rom. 8:23).
DEMONSTRATION OF GOD’S GRACE: “The grace which will be brought to us by the revelation of Jesus Christ” (I Peter. 1:13), and which will free us from all sin – God’s mercy, the mercy for which we wait unto eternal life (Jude 21) and which will free us from all misery.” (Bengel)
DEMONSTRATION OF GOD’S POWER: The omnipotence which transfigures us into conformity with the Redeemer and elevates us to the most glorious spiritual body. At that time the same power which moves the whole universe will act upon our body! “He will change our body of humiliation that it may be fashioned like unto his body of glory, according to the power by which he is able to subdue the whole world” (Phil. 3:21).
QUOTE FROM ERICH SAUER – “Therefore Paul uses for “rapture” a particularly strong word (harpazo, I Thess. 4:17), which really means, to seize hastily, to rob with violence, to draw to oneself by swift, sudden movement, which word Luke uses in the Acts to describe how Paul was torn away by the Roman soldiers from the mob of his oppressors (Acts 23:10.) And in I Thess, 1:10, where Paul calls the rapture a “salvation from the coming wrath” he uses a word (GK, rhuo) which means strictly a “rescue with power,” the same word by which in II Tim. 4:17 he describes his preservation in Nero’s judgment court, his “rescue out of the jaws of the lion.”
Therefore he describes the taking home of the church by an accumulation of powerful military figures. The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with an “alarm signal,” with a “word of command,” a “battle cry,” with a “trumpet clang” of the “trump of God.” And then will He, the royal Conqueror, accompanied by the armies of heaven, unite with Himself forever His earthly warriors.
And this is of all the most important, for the Rapture is:
A PROMISED HOMEGOING OR A CATCHING UP, and as such it is a uniting of the members to the Head; for the Lord Himself will descend and we shall be with Him forever (I Thess. 4:16, 17). He will present the church to “Himself” glorified (Eph. 5:27) for the purpose of perfecting His glory as the Redeemer (Eph. 1:23). “I come again and will receive you to myself, that where I am ye also may be” (John 14:2,3). And the rapture is: Joining of all members of Christ’s church (dead and living) I Thess. 4:17); For the first time the completed church shall be in one place at one time – and that is in the air with Christ.
FIRST - NOW FINALLY – THE RAPTURE IS THIRDLY THE PROMISED TRANSFORMATION OF OUR BODIES in a moment, twinkling of an eye – changed – Paul told Philippians (3:21) changed from body humiliation to body of glory. Paul told Corinthians (Is.:51,53) corruptible because incorruptible, moral – immortal. TRIUMPH OVER: Sin, and the flesh - death, disease - Satan, demons - hell and the grave. And, oh what Blessedness. This is the “blessed hope” of the redeemed (Titus 2:13).
SECONDLY, not only Christ’s special work, but he demonstrated the new resurrected body – visible with eyes (Luke 24:40) – touched with hands (Luke 24:39, John 20:27) – Eat honey and fish (Luke 24:41-43) and had flesh and bones (Luke 24:39).
THIRDLY, Scripture speaks of the resurrection of bodies out of the graves. “The hour comes in which all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of man” (John 5:28, 29).
FOURTHLY, IT IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE – We can form no conception of the heavenly material. Only figurative language is possible.

Understanding the Fight for Jerusalem
When Jesus told His disciples and us about the future he built every word of it around one city on earth named Jerusalem (Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21). Jesus framed His words about the rest of the history of this planet by the sight of Jerusalem in all its earthly glory spread out in front of Him. Jerusalem is the trigger that will set off the grand finale for planet Earth.
Jerusalem is the Trigger
Twenty-six hundred years ago God foretold that the fate of the entire planet earth would hinge upon one city.
The Fight for Jerusalem, and all the events leading up to that fight, is the spot in the news that you should keep your eyes riveted—if you want to know what God has planned for this world.
“No city has been coveted and fought over as much as Jerusalem, the City of Peace. Babylonians, Macedonians, Ptolemies, Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Persians, Arabs, Seljuks, Crusaders, Mongols, Mamelukes, Turks, British, and Jordanians are only some of the conquerors whose names have fluttered across the pages of its bloody and anguished past. Jerusalem is a sacred city - a city that has played a role in history out of all proportion to its economic importance or size!”
Here, briefly, are the periods In Jerusalem's fascinating history so far. Then we will look at what may soon be in the world’s headline news reports.
PERIOD-1: FIRST TEMPLE PERIOD FROM 1000 B.C.-586 B.C.
PERIOD 2: THE SECOND TEMPLE FROM 538 B.C. TO A.D. 70
PERIOD-3: GENTILE PERIOD FROM A.D. 70 TO 1948. Remember what Jesus said about these times in which we live, that He called the “times of the Gentiles”? Luke 21:24 (NKJV) And they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. What have these “times of the Gentiles” looked like? Let's take a tour of this Gentile period noting the different eras that span nineteen centuries.
1. The ROMAN PERIOD (AD 70 - 33) The Romans brought their own people to repopulate the city.
2. The BYZANTINE PERIOD (330 - 638) This is the period after Constantine.
3. The FIRST MUSLIM PERIOD (638 - 1099) Mohammed began the religion of Islam and conquered the city of Jerusalem with the sword.
4. The CRUSADER PERIOD (1099 - 1187) Pope Urban 2 issued a decree saying that anyone willing to go to the holy land to liberate it from the Muslims would be forgiven all sins, and if unable to go, the same benefits would extend to those who contributed financially to send a substitute
5. The LATER MUSLIM PERIOD (1187 - 1517) Once again, the Muslims dominated the land of Israel for four long centuries.
6. The TURKISH PERIOD (1517 - 1917) The Ottoman Turks defeated the Muslims, and Suleiman ruled from Constantinople over the Eastern wing of the Roman Empire. Under his reign, the present walls of the city of Jerusalem were built nearly four hundred years ago.
7. The BRITISH PERIOD (1917 - 1948) The British asked the United Nations to resolve the conflict surrounding the city and the land was given to the Jews in 1948. Jerusalem was divided up into four sectors - Jewish, Muslim, Christian, and Armenian.
8. Current period from A.D. 1948 to the Tribulation. But in the war of 1967, the city fell to Israeli hands and the territory all the way to the Jordan River (known as the West Bank) became a part of the Israeli state. Many people believe that this ended the domination of the Gentiles which Christ spoke about. 'Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled (Luke 21:24). This explains why some people think that Christ's return may be near.
PERIOD-4: TRIBULATION PERIOD JERUSALEM. The fourth period is still the future. The battle of Armageddon will spill over to Jerusalem.

God has stated that His Word endures forever. Of course, we know that the Word as far as the copy “settled in Heaven” (Ps. 119:89), is enduring forever.
But what about the copy we hold?
How do we know this Book is the same one that God wrote by way of inspiration?
First, let’s survey the History of the Transmission of the Bible. As far as the history of this transmission of God's Word goes, we find there are four key periods:
1. Pre-Moses: Oral traditions that are incorporated by inspired writers so that what God wants to be a part--is written down.
2. Moses to Ezra (1500-500 BC): Prophets and Priests are the writers and guardians of the Word of God that is always in their custody at the Tabernacle and later, at the Temple. Then carried into Captivity, returned with the Exiles, and kept safe, copied, and distributed. Moses placed them in the Tabernacle verse.
• 1500 BC: Egyptian Hieroglyphics influenced writing from Moses and Exodus era. The scrolls of God's Word were kept in the Tabernacle.
• 1000 BC: Phoenician-influenced writing from the time of David and the prophets. They found the lost book of the Law in the Temple because that is where it was kept.
• 500BC: When the captives returned from Babylon nearly all were unable to read the old written Hebrew scrolls. So, Ezra invented modern, block-style written Hebrew, copied all of the manuscripts into Modern Hebrew, and started a reading plan in the synagogues.
Ezra is the father of Modern Hebrew, the synagogues, the Scribes, and most likely: the author of the Psalm 119 poem about the wonders of the Word. The scrolls were kept in the Temple.
• 200 BC: the scrolls Ezra copied and established into the 22 Book Old Testament canon, were taken by the LXX team in Alexandria, translated into Greek, and spread across the ancient world. The LXX became the Bible of Christ and His Apostles.
3. Ezra to the Apostle John (500 BC – 100 AD): Christ and His Apostles affirmed the Old Testament Scriptures, so we know that the 22 book Old Testament (our 39 Old Testament books) is the exact Word from God.
Then Jesus instituted His apostles as the guardians of His Word, and they, or a close associate under their care wrote the 27 books of the New Testament. The net result: we have the Scriptures inspired and preserved by God in our hands today.

What a day. I taught 1 Thessalonians 5 RIGHT HERE in the Roman Forum area of Ancient Thessalonica! Today most of the city's residents walk right by not knowing this was the context for Paul's amazing Epistle to the saints at Thessalonica! Hope your heart gets stirred like we were as we studied chapter 5.
Turn back to I Thessalonians 5. In this chapter, there are more imperative commands than any other paragraph in God’s Word. It is one of the clearest descriptions of the basic duties of a believer in Christ’s church. We must take seriously Paul’s fifth, sixth, and seventh commands to “encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all men” (1 Thessalonians 5:14).
1 Thessalonians 5:11-26
1. v.11a Therefore comfort each other and
2. v. 11b edify one another, just as you also are doing. 12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake.
3. v. 13b Be at peace among yourselves.
4. v. 14a Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly,
5. v. 14b comfort the fainthearted,
6. v. 14c uphold the weak,
7. v. 14d be patient with all.
8. v. 15a See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone,
9. v. 15b but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 10. v. 16 Rejoice always,
11. v. 17 pray without ceasing,
12. v. 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
13. v. 19 Do not quench the Spirit.
14. v. 20 Do not despise prophecies.
15. v. 21a Test all things;
16. v. 21b hold fast what is good.
17. v. 22 Abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
18. v. 25 Brethren, pray for us.
19. v. 26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.

In Matthew 5:45, Our Father is Kind.
In Matthew 5:48, Our Father is Perfect.
In Matthew 6:1,3-4a, Our Father gives Rewards to those who give to the needy secretly, not for selfish gain.
In Matthew 6:4b,6, Our Father sees everything, hears prayers, and is everywhere present.
In Matthew 6:8, Our Father Knows our Needs.
In Matthew 6:9, Our Father is the One to Whom we Direct our Prayers.
In Matthew 6:14, Our Father Forgives Sins.
In Matthew 6:26-32, Our Father Cares Deeply for Us.

the-only-way-to-eternal-life-redemption
Redemption is so important, that is what we sing about as soon as we are given the opportunity to express our gratitude in Heaven. So, redemption is a big subject, and one we each need to more fully understand. How about this morning we all become redemption-focused, and ask the Lord to open our hearts to the blessings we will be singing about in Heaven, while we’re here on Earth?
The only way for us to really focus on understanding redemption is to see and hear Christ as He redeemed us. Turn back with me now to John 19:30.
In John 19:30 we witness the climactic end of Christ's redemption as the Lamb of God. This summary, of the work of redemption, was captured by John, as he stood at the foot of the Cross. While looking up through the darkness, John heard and recorded Christ's one-word explanation of the work of redemption.
John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
In English we would say: “it is finished”; but in Greek, those three words are summed up in the single word that John heard Christ gasp on the cross—tetelestai.
TETELESTAI Means:
It Is Finished
“Tetelestai” was Jesus declaring to God His Father that the price of salvation was paid; and the debt of the sin of the world was paid; and the work of redemption was complete.
This word that Jesus gasped from the Cross, was a word that was very familiar to those of the New Testament times.
This word “tetelestai” should burn into our hearts and minds because it was exactly the same word that a Roman judge would write on a criminals certificate of debt when he was released from prison—“tetelestai”: your debt to the Roman law is now paid in full. That meant there was no further condemnation or penalty that ever needed to be paid.
It is the same word that would be written on the certificate of a slave who was redeemed. After he had been enslaved to pay off a debt—“tetelestai” meant, your debt is paid in full, you may now go forth as a free man!
Those two historic usages help us to understand the implications to each of the believers who have become followers of Christ, when:

Jesus warned of a counterfeit Christ who would one day in the future stand in a rebuilt Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. Then a few years later, the Apostle Paul predicted the same thing, an Antichrist, the man of sin would stand and be worshiped in a Temple in Jerusalem. About 40 years after Jesus predicted this event; the Romans systematically destroyed the magnificent Temple of Herod.
For 2000 years there has been no way this could ever happen. There was no temple in Jerusalem. There was no Israel to build a temple. It was as hopeless as a valley of dry bones. But God began to work a series of incredible situations that ended with there being a free nation of Israel by May of 1948 for the first time in 2,600 years! But no temple. There were over 100 million fierce enemies, armed to the teeth in the way. But Jesus said a temple was coming, Daniel said so, Paul said the same, and John saw it in Revelation. So how do we get from today to that temple?
There is an event coming on the horizon that could make a way for the Jews to build their temple in Jerusalem. If a coalition of Moslems and Arabs joined the Russians in attacking Israel. And if that attack was repulsed in such a devastating way that 80% of the armies were destroyed, Israel would be confident enough to start to rebuild. This morning we need to examine Ezekiel’s report of a future battle on the hills of Israel. Some say it is at the end of the Millennium, others at the end of the Tribulation. But, what if it happened sooner? There is really no reason that Russia couldn’t invade as soon as today!
There have been few times God has directly intervened in human history. This morning we are going to study one of the more dramatic moments in human history. The great northern confederacy is poised to strike. The tiny and totally surrounded target is Israel. The entire world (UN General Assembly) is united against this little nation. The armies of the Moslem and Russian lands are united and the goal is annihilation!
Join me as we turn to Ezekiel 38:1-6 and 18-23.
Now watch as the events of these chapters unfold before your eyes.
There are three truths we need to hold onto this morning:
1. The Scene in Ezekiel 37-39
2. The Sequence in Daniel 9:20-27
3. The Savior Revelation 19:10
THE SCENE IN EZEKIEL 37-39
Chapter 37 describes the rebirth of Israel from the Diaspora. As Israel is re-gathered there is a reoccurring theme. Note v. 6 “Then you shall know”. This repeated in 37:13, 37:14, 38:23, 39:6, 7
Chapters 38-39 describe the deliverance of Israel.
