As a Boom Operator (Microphone Placement Technician) it's your decision as to how it's best to capture the audio in the scene. Sure, if the sound mixer wants something more or his/her style is to capture sound a different way, you'll need to follow those guidelines but as a rule, what should you be putting a mic on? In this video I'll be covering just that!

The video I'm reacting to in this video was requested shortly after it was released. I had already watched the video and didn't want do an unfair, preplanned reaction video so I sat on it until I forgot what was said. I was just sent a request to react to this video again and since I've forgotten what was said, now is a good time. Enjoy, with me, a reaction to Deity Microphone's video "How To Be A Boom Operator".

It's very rare that I come across a piece of gear I don't want to be without on set but the Ambient QDS "Dipstick" is certainly one of those pieces. In short, like it says in the title of this video, Boom Ops Need This!
At the time of this video's release (Labor Day 2020) I have over 2 1/2 years of experience using the Dipstick on set. Despite my love for the QDS now, I didn't start off loving it. That is why I may come off as biased in favor of the Dipstick now and still consider this to be an honest review. I'm speaking very openly and am being very transparent about everything in this video because I want you to understand where I'm coming from here.
In this video I'll show you multiple ways to use the QDS Dipstick on set. If you've never thought about buying a Dipstick, think about it as you watch me show you the many different ways you can use it.

Special thanks to Hugo Kundert for, yet again, helping me with another boom pole related video.

IMPORTANT: I highly recommend you leave the smallest segment of your boom pole inside the pole when using a QDS. The smallest section may not properly support the weight of the QDS along with the microphone, suspension and wind protection and extending it could lead to breakage if you're not careful.

Full Disclosure:
Ambient did send me the QDS "Dipstick" in exchange for a fair review. I did not pay for it and get to keep it following the review but did not allow it to affect my opinion so you can be certain that this is a fair review.

When I created the 3rd version of my studio, I wanted it to be both effective and recyclable when I move. I recently moved so how did my studio hold up?

Very few people on a film set have the privilege of being able to listen to the live audio being recorded. The Director, Script Supervisor, Producers, VIPS and Studio Executives are some of the few that will be issued Comteks, a portable listening device tuned to the production audio mix track. Also included is a pair of headphones.
The balance between quality and price is one to be considered and many times sound mixers spend a little amount of money on cheap, heavily bass boosted headphones that break after a couple of weeks. The other extreme is spending too much on a pair of headphones and those have a tendency of walking away.
Enter Halter Technical Scene Monitors - a headphone made specifically for Comteks used on a film set. They are light and acoustically flat allowing you the hear the production mix track without outrageous coloration.

FULL DISCLOSURE:
Halter Technical sent me this pair of Scene Monitors to evaluate and keep in exchange for a fair review. My review is not influenced by the fact that I get to keep the product.
