Was Plato a Communist? Some argue that Plato did, indeed, champion public ownership of the means of production. However, others contest that Plato’s preference for elite rulership is a vindication of traditional hierarchies.
In a discussion with Jean-François Gariépy, I outline how Plato’s dialogue, The Republic, influenced Communist movements from the French Conspiracy of Equals up to the Russian Bolsheviks.
