Es ist natürlich nicht von Johnny Cash, sondern im Original von Nine Inch Nails.
Aber irgendwie ist es zu seinem Song geworden.
Hier die Geschichte...

„Hi, this is Rea Garvey, ich bin Musiker, Sänger, Songwriter. Und mein Klassiker ist ein Lied von Johnny Cash. Das heißt „Hurt“. Das hat er nicht selber geschrieben, das ist ein Lied von Nine Inch Nails.
Aber er ist einer der wenigsten Menschen, die das Original getoppt haben, meiner Meinung nach. Er hat eine Emotion da reingebracht, die wahrscheinlich widerspiegelt, was der Sänger damals bei Nine Inch Nails wahrscheinlich sagen wollte. Aber Johnny hat’s zu seinem gemacht.
Ich war in LA, ich saß dann in dem Studio, wo er das tatsächlich aufgenommen hat. Wusste ich zu der Zeit nicht. Ich saß in seiner Gesangskabine, hab da meine Platte eingesungen, wusste aber nicht, dass das auch Johnnys Gesangskabine war.
Aber als ich dann die Platte aufgemacht habe und durch das Booklet blätterte, da sah ich ein Bild von Johnny Cash wie er saß in dem Stuhl, wo ich gerade auch saß. Ich hab irgendwie das Gefühl, Musik ist so ein Netzwerk und man kreuzt seine Wege zu verschiedenen Zeiten. Und das war eben der Zeitpunkt, wo ich: Obwohl Johnny Cash nicht mehr bei uns war … Da habe ich Johnny Cash getroffen!
Heutzutage wird alles so perfekt aufgenommen und gespeichert. Und in dieser Version hörst Du, wie das Klavier so übersteuert und verzerrt. Und der Gesang zum Teil auch.
Und das liebe ich auch, wenn so ein Lied durchkommt. Durch die Imperfektion trotzdem so wahr und ehrlich ist, dass Du weißt, dass der nächste Take nie so gut sein wird wie der Take. Als meine Tochter geboren wurde, da war die erste Platte, die ich ihr vorgespielt habe, war Johnny Cash. Sie stand eigentlich mehr auf Paul van Dyk, aber was willste machen.
