There are no free rides on a homestead. Even if you're a pig, you have to earn your keep, and it is time for us to move our pigs out to the garden and put them to work.
We are attempting to turn a part of our pasture into a vegetable garden, but it has been nearly impossible to stop the weeds and grass from taking over. So, we have decided to run our pigs through it to clear some ground. That in combination with utilizing some ground cover should do the trick! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQcCmxN0_Pc

Max wanted to go on a hike in the woods to look for Pokemon. Little did I know, we would run into a pretty nice haul of chanterelle mushrooms!

I captured video of a blue mud dauber wasp paralyzing its 8-legged victim and loading it into its brooding chamber. She will lay a single egg in the mud tube that she created and then fill it with paralyzed spiders. Once the egg hatches, the larva will feed on the spiders until next spring when it will pupate into an adult and chew its way out.

In this video, I give a quick comparison of two similar edible mushrooms commonly found here in the southeastern US: the wood ear (Auricularia sp.) and the amber jelly roll (Exidia crenata).
These mushrooms - but especially the Auricularia - are a couple of my favorite mushrooms to find out in the woods. The wood ears really do look AND FEEL like a human ear! If you've never seen one in person before, you should head out to the forest after a good rain and find a few. They are fascinating!
Please note that I am not a mushroom expert! You should not take anything you see/hear in this video as fact; but rather use it as a guide while doing your own research.

A quick update on our attempt at using dried leaves as bedding for our chicken coop. I talk about the pros and cons of using this free, easy to find resource in your coop.
Special thanks to Becky Stallard for the update request. I hope it is helpful!!

This one is actually a few weeks old. Our goal for this summer has been to get started with some chickens. Eventually, we would like to have a couple dozen barred rocks, but we decided to start out with a smaller test batch.
Right now, we have 6 barnyard mix birds, and I've been using them to test out my brooder, chicken tractor design, and coop. On this day, we began our free ranging beta test. I want to find out if free ranging is going to be possible without suffering losses from predators.

As a kid, I always wanted to have a pond in my back yard. I even tried to talk my parents into letting me put catfish into the swimming pool! Needless to say... that didn't happen.
But, now, the dream has come true! We have our own pond in the pasture with some decent sized bass and bream. In fact, I was able to take Our Little Homestead Helper out on her first fishing trip, and she caught her first ever fish!
It was a pretty unforgettable moment for me. I was also able to get it on video, so I thought I would share it.
