This mini-documentary, filmed and edited by Ai Xiaoming and re-edited and subtitled by China Change, depicts Zhang Qing’s first visit to her husband Guo Feixiong in Meizhou Prison. It is also a snapshot of the life of Zhang Qing and her two children in 2007 and 2008 in Guangzhou.
Guo Feixiong (aka Yang Maodong) is a pioneer of the rights defense movement in China which began in the early 2000s. He was imprisoned from 2006 to 2011, and again, from 2013 to 2019, suffering brutal torture and inhumane treatment.
His wife Zhang Qing fled China with their two children to the United States in early 2009.
A free citizen, Guo Feixiong was illegally blocked from leaving China on January 28, 2021 at Shanghai Pudong Airport. He was attempting to visit his wife who, by then, was terminally ill. He was detained again in early December 2021. It is part of China’s effort to further tighten control leading up to the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will open on February 4, 2022.
Zhang Qing died on January 10, 2022, in Germantown, Maryland. On January 12, a day after the news of her death reached China, police in Guangdong issued a notice of Guo Fexiong's formal arrest and charged him with “inciting subversion of state power.”

I'm Yaxue Cao, the editor of ChinaChange.org. I spent 30 days in Taiwan in November and December, 2022, and interviewed as many people. The time frame for the trip was deliberately chosen to observe the local elections against the backdrop of China’s military threat, and to take measure of Taiwanese attitudes towards totalitarian China as they enjoy their robust democracy. In this interview series you will hear directly from some of the people I’ve talked to. The goal of the Taiwan Interview Series is to bring outside audiences a better understanding of Taiwan, because the potential war wouldn’t just be a war to decide the fate of a small island, nor would it be fought between China and Taiwan only. It will be our war too. Whether or not we prevail will be consequential and will reshape history.
Kuma Academy is a new civil society organization in Taiwan that provides civil emergency response training programs to prepare the population for a potential invasion from China.

我是曹雅學,是改變中國網站的編輯 (ChinaChange.org)。

After leaving China Women News, Lü Pin began to work with female intellectuals pioneering women’s rights advocacy in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2009, Lü Pin founded ‘Feminist Voices.' Its solid interpretation of women issues attracted many young educated women. A small NGO called ‘One-yuan Commune’ was established in Beijing that eventually became a springboard for street activism from 2012 to 2015.
