Two officials from the Patterson Joint Unified School District in Sacramento, California, have admitted to embezzling funds and resources totaling up to $1.8 million, along with electricity, to secretly construct and operate a cryptocurrency mining operation. The Department of Justice revealed that Jeffrey Menge, the assistant superintendent, diverted as much as $1.5 million over four years, whereas Eric Drabert, the IT director, appropriated up to $300,000.

Their fraudulent activities included the creation of a fictitious executive to facilitate over $1.2 million in fraudulent transactions through a company controlled by Menge, named CenCal Tech. This involved double billing, overbilling, and charging for undelivered items to the district. They used the embezzled funds to purchase high-end graphics cards for their crypto mining setup, which was powered by the school district's electricity. Additionally, they spent on luxury items and property renovations, including a 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia and remodeling of properties.

Following an FBI raid last year, both Menge and Drabert pleaded guilty to these charges in a federal court in Sacramento. They face a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with their sentencing scheduled for May 30
