Aviation Weekly #11 - Caister Lifeboat Drones, Stratolaunch, Icelandair in-flight performance, Legacy Aviation
1. Norfolk Lifeboat Crew testing fleet of drones for search and rescue.
2. Paul Allen's Stratolaunch fires up all six of its engines.
3. IcelandAir Cabin Crew put on a performance.
4. Flying School Feature from Philadelphia - Legacy Aviation
My name is Ben Lovegrove and here is this week's round-up of aviation news from high altitude to below 400 feet. Each week I bring you selected stories in the worlds of airlines, flight training, aviation history, drones and UAV.
Head over to http://www.redspan.com to find out how I can make marketing videos for your aviation business.
1. In Aviation Weekly #2 we mentioned how Devon & Cornwall and Dorset Police were the first to have an operational drone unit to help with various policing tasks. It's no longer unusual to see the emergency services using UAV but it's always encouraging to witness their versatility.
The Caister Lifeboat in Norfolk is testing a fleet of drones equipped with lights and cameras for use in its search and rescue operations. Always with safety in mind their tests are being carried out in close cooperation with the CAA.
Drones provide the crews with clear advantages when it comes to searching for people in distress out at sea. From the water's surface visibility is limited by the swell but with a drone in the sky the crew are able to see much further and the view is unhindered by rolling waves.
The Caister Lifeboat service is made up of thirty volunteers and works independently of the RNLI. The service covers a radius of 250 miles of the North Sea.
2. Engineers at the Mojave Air and Space Port successfully tested all six engines on the prototype Stratolaunch earlier this month.
The Stratolaunch is one of the largest aircraft ever built and is designed for a variety of sub orbital roles. So far the flight controls, fuel, electrical, pneumatic and fire detection systems have all been tested.
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is sponsoring the project which was conceived as a means to provide easier access to Space. The aircraft was designed by Burt Rutan who is famous for his many aircraft designs ranging from small, single-seat homebuilts like the VariEze and Long-EZ, to research aircraft and those designed to enter the edge of Space.
The Stratolaunch weighs 250 tons, has a wingspan of 385 feet, and measures 238 feet from nose to tail. The objective is to create an aircraft that will be used to launch satellites and rockets from low orbit.
3. If the thought of a long flight from London to New York doesn't seem like a plea

Jet Fighter Pilots - 10 Leadership Tips They Can Teach Us
In this video I list ten characteristics of leadership that you can cultivate from the examples shown by jet fighter pilots.
Being a good leader is not something that can be taken for granted. It takes regular focus on self improvement to maintain a high standard. Strong leadership skills come with time, dedication, and intention.
So it's always useful to have a quick summary of the strengths of character needed to be one of life's leaders. It's particularly interesting if the tips are based upon the examples shown by jet fighter pilots who, by the nature of their training and profession, are strong leaders.
Their personality traits usually include self-control, motivation, persistance, confidence, and patience. They are also opportunistic and calculated risk takers, so they make a good choice for showing us the way.
So here are ten leadership tips demonstrated by the example shown by jet fighter pilots:
(Watch the video for the explanations for each)
1. Be Dedicated.
2. Be Reliable.
3. Be an Inspiration.
4. Be Cooperative.
5. Be an Example.
6. Be a Motivator.
7. Be a Visionary.
8. Be Organised.
9. Be a Communicator.
10. Be Humble.
Learn from jet fighter pilots and keep this important tip in mind: great leadership is all about life-long learning.
Change is a constant so there will always be new skills and technologies that need to be mastered. The fact that you can admit that you don't know everything but you're curious and always keen to learn new things will make you appear more approachable. Passing on those skills and the new found knowledge will reinforce your status as a leader.
You don't have to become a jet fighter pilot to be a good leader but you can learn from these examples.
If you fly any type of aircraft these tips may help you become a better pilot too.
Thanks for watching. I hope you found this video of interest and of use.
Please give it a like and share with others. If you have any tips you would like to pass on please add a comment below.
Happy Landings!

Ground School Studies For The Private Pilots License
Hello, my name is Ben Lovegrove and in this video I'm going to review Rod Machado’s 40-Hour Private Pilot eLearning Ground School.
Are you struggling with the ground school subjects for the Private Pilots Licence exams?
Do you find book learning difficult, and do you long for easy to follow explanations that combine accuracy with humour?
Are you already a PPL holder, but you want to refresh your knowledge of the key subjects quickly, without going through the entire process again?
When I learned to fly 30 years ago all I had was a pile of textbooks and the occasional evening class arranged by the flight school.
I had to drive to a classroom where a Flight Instructor would patiently explain the PPL subject matter to a collection of bewildered students using only a whiteboard and a few slides.
Eventually, after many hours of study and practice tests, not to mention travelling back and forth to classes, I passed all the exams.
But for people learning today there are far more efficient ways of learning about all the core subjects required for the PPL.
Rod Machado is Certified Flight Instructor, with degrees in Psychology and Aviation Science, who has taught hundreds of people how to fly since he began instructing in 1973.
He is a prolific author, and the publisher of dozens of books, ebooks, CDs, and articles.
He has appeared in TV shows, given seminars, and been a columnist in the aviation press.
In short, there is no one more qualified to be your personal ground school instructor.
And you can benefit from Rod's experience and teaching in his 40-Hour Private Pilot eLearning Ground School.
Here are a few titles of some of the lectures included in the 26 course modules.
Aerodynamics: The Wing is the Thing.
Engines: Knowledge of Engines Is Power.
Electrical Systems: Knowing What’s Watt.
Flight Instruments: Clocks, Tops & Toys.
Federal Aviation Regulations: How FAR Can We Go?
Airport Operations: No Doctor Needed.
Radio Operations: Aviation Spoken Here. Airspace: The Wild Blue, Green and Red Yonder.

7 Reasons why you should quit Facebook and get some of your life back
In this video I explain why I’ve reduced my use of Facebook down to about 1% of what it used to be and give 7 reasons why you should quit Facebook too.
My criticisms of Facebook could be applied to other forms of social media including those in which I’m still active, like Twitter, but if I’m to untangle myself from the knots of cyberspace then I have to start somewhere, so Facebook it is.
Furthermore I’m not judging others for continuing to use Facebook. It contains many useful groups and there is much to be gained from it if you use it with strict discernment but the home feed no longer holds any interest for me.
So why quit Facebook? What follows are my personal reasons. Many hundreds of millions of people will continue to use this platform and derive some benefit from it, so good luck to them. However, I’m reaching the end of the road and for me it’s time to spend my time doing other things.
1. Facebook time is not recreation.
It’s often thought that scrolling through newsfeeds for hours is no more or less harmful than sitting in front of the TV and I’m inclined to agree, but I don’t think either practices are necessarily harmless. Obviously you can choose what TV programs to watch and likewise you can tailor your Facebook feed to a certain degree using several options:
- Choosing which of your friends to follow.
- Choosing which pages to follow.
- Joining or leaving groups.
With a little tinkering you can create a newsfeed that’s more to your taste but what you can’t prevent are the endless adverts, suggestions, and the nannying announcements about Covid or anything else that the Facebook AI thinks you should know about.
Time spent on Facebook is no longer a form of recreation, if it ever was, it’s just more time for Facebook to learn more about you and to expose you to more advertising.
2. Facebook time drains your energy.

Beginner's Guide To Ufology, UFO Studies, UAP - Enroll here: https://bit.ly/39LTMz5 (free preview)

Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind, CE-5 Protocols, ET Contact Method
In this video I discuss the CE-5 Protocols and the CE-5 film that is due for release in April 2020. This is a subject that is too far down the rabbit hole of Ufology for some but let’s just take it step by step and see what we find.
Before I begin, for the benefit of those who have never heard of them, here is a brief explanation of the terminology.
The ‘CE’ in CE-5 stands for Close Encounters.
In Ufology, a Close Encounter is an incident in which an individual or a group sees or experiences a UFO.
The term was first suggested by the UFO investigator J Allen Hynek's in his book “The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry”, published in 1972.
The term became widely known during the success of Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in which Hynek had a cameo appearance.
The French investigator depicted in that film was based upon the scientist and UFO researcher, Jacques Vallée.
Close Encounters of the First Kind refer to visual sightings of a UFO that is in close proximity.
Close Encounters of the Second Kind are those near sightings that include some kind of physical evidence of the craft’s appearance.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind are those in which a being or occupant is present.
Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind are those (according to Hynek) which involve abduction by extraterrestrials, but Vallée argued that they should include non-abduction cases in which the witnesses experienced some kind of change of consciousness.
Close Encounters of the Fifth Kind is a category suggested by Dr Steven M. Greer, founder of the CSETI and Disclosure projects.
These are human initiated encounters with extraterrestrials.
That’s a short sentence for a concept that is a big stretch of the imagination, and for some it’s a stretch too far.
It’s one thing to acknowledge that Top Gun US Navy pilots have witnessed UFOs that could be; technology developed in USAPs (Unacknowledged Special Access Projects); evidence of a leap-frog in technology by a foreign power; interdimensional or extraterrestrial flying objects; or even something that originates from deep within our oceans. But for some people it’s just too mind-boggling to suggest that human beings can initiate contact with the intelligences flying these things, and not only make contact but provoke a response that can be captured on film.
And yet that is precisely what those who use the CE-5 Protocols claim to be doing.
