The Irish are building pre-fabricated 'Irish pubs,' and shipping them all over the world. From Dubai to North America, and even Nigeria. Over 1,000 pubs have been shipped and installed since 1991. All made entirely by the Irish, using materials from Ireland.
You thought wavy brows were a ridiculous fashion trend to die for? Think again - people way back in history were dying long before. Lucky for us, now we know better than to fall victim to something as killer as radioactive makeup. Corsets are a different thing altogether.
It is not cheap to be stylish and trendy. You think wearing high heels can be dangerous for your health? How about having to bind your feet so tight, they will only grow up to three inches? The lotus feet trend was huge in 10th century China, where women with smaller feet had much higher value. They would break and restructure the bones of their feet, which in turn meant limited walking, neverending infections and a lifetime of pain. So wear those stilettos, sister!
Thing strobing and contouring is too much? History has been dotted with the wealthy, both men and women, using lead-based makeup to make themselves present wealthy. Pale skin meant you didn’t need to expose yourself to the sun’s rays in the field. But the poison would eat away at the skin and ultimately rot the teeth.
Speaking of rotten teeth, they too were once a big fashion statement of the wealthy. The Elizabethan era brought sugar to the tables of aristocrats, but not oral hygiene. Sugar was pricey, but dental decay meant you had plenty in your coffers to afford cake for dinner. Yikes!
Women today rebel against something as simple as a bra, but before we had these cups attached with a string to poke in our flesh, ladies of yesteryear would wear tightlacing corsets to make their waists as tiny as possible. It wasn’t without a price though, as tightlacing mashed their organs together, broke their ribs and made fashion followers faint with shortness of breath.
Men weren’t without their guilty pleasures too. In Edwardian era, toffs would wear high collars that made the girls swoon over them. It was the guys who did the swooning for appearance, as the collars were so stiff, they cut off blood supply to the brain. No wonder they were so silly!
Keep watching for more historically deadly fashion trends!
Nowadays, many of us have gym membership or attend classes at a local gym on a daily basis, but fifty years ago, gyms as we know them today didn’t exist.
When fitness first became fashionable you had to get your sweat-on while strapped to extremely strange contraptions, but was it workout, or torture?
Surprising but true, the stomach punching apparatus, the thigh extender and the torso stretcher are not instruments of torture, but are actually the first fitness machines. Could you believe their names and the purpose they served?
In 1865, Swedish physician Gustav Zander opened Stockholm’s first gym. His machines allowed the user to be active or passive, as they wanted, according to his wish. You could ride a mechanical horse, or let it do all the riding for you. It was nothing like modern-day workouts.
Back then, the movement for health and exercise was just taking off in Europe. People began using their muscles for something other than physical labor. White-collar workers started working out to make up for their sedentary lifestyle. Wealthier people even bought very expensive equipment to exercise at home.
In the early 1900s, Zander’s machines began making their way to the U.S. In 1906, gyms were being opened in 146 countries around the world. Some of these machines were even found on the Titanic. However, they disappeared by the 1930s and were replaced by smaller equipment.
Nowadays, we can sweat away on modern versions of the Victorian treadmills. Old-fashioned but good!
The word “gym” is a contraction of “gymnasium” which is derived from the ancient Greek word gymnasion. The ancient Greek gymnasiums were places where athletes trained for public games such as the Olympics. After the ancient Greeks, gyms disappeared for centuries. Medieval and Renaissance life was physically arduous enough, and ordinary people got all the exercise they needed working on the land and carrying out chores.
KRISTA FRANCIS lost 248lbs after becoming too overweight to fit through the door whilst carrying her son. Krista, of Osage Beach, Missouri, has struggled with her weight since she was a teenager, weighing 386lbs at her heaviest. The breaking point for Krista came when she was unable to carry her son, Ezra, who was born with cerebral palsy, through the bathroom door having to call her husband for help. Krista told Truly: “I felt diminished and very embarrassed and disappointed in myself, I couldn’t help my son in the moments that he really needed me.” Krista became morbidly obese as a teenager as a result of an unhealthy dependency on food. “I ate what I wanted at any moment of the day,” she explained. Krista’s mum, Laura, revealed how bullies worsened Krista’s relationship with food, resulting in an emotional problem. Now mum to both Ezra, 10, and Adelie, six, Krista credits motherhood for her weight loss after the realisation she needed to change her life for her children. She now works out five days a week at the gym and in the future, Krista dreams of becoming a competitive bodybuilder, meaning she may have to have her loose skin removed. But for now, Krista's perfectly happy with her body and the excess skin that comes with it, saying it represents “growth, change and evolution”. On her weight loss journey, Krista says: “I’m very proud of myself and my achievements, I’ve created a better picture for my kids, becoming more active in their lives.”
When alcohol reaches our liver to metabolize, it produces the highly toxic chemical acetaldehyde. Our bodies combat this with acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, a naturally ocurring enzyme. But drinking too much can overwhelm these enzymes, leading to a build up of acetaldehyde. This may result in a hangover, nausea, fatigue and even loss of intelligence.

A CHEERLEADER who lost both of her legs in a car accident isn't giving up on doing what she loves. Sarah Frei, from Clearfield, Utah, was travelling with friends on July 30th, 2020, when they were hit head on by a drunk driver. The 17-year-old suffered the worst of the injuries and was instantly paralysed. Sarah, who loves cheerleading, golf and swimming, was heavily sedated and her parents had to make the decision to amputate her legs due to risk of infection. Sarah told Truly: “The hardest thing I’ve had to adapt to is relearning how to do everything.” When Sarah woke up in the hospital, she had a breathing tube down her throat, a neck brace on and both legs amputated. Her parents, Amy and Greg, had to tell her what had happened. Since the accident, with the help of physical therapy and support from family and friends, Sarah has gone from strength to strength and has even resumed some of her favourite hobbies. “My dad said you can still do everything you want to do, you just have to find a new way of doing it - that really stuck with me.” Sarah has even been able to get back into her cheer uniform, something she thought would be impossible: “I’ve been cheerleading for about five years and I didn’t think I’d be able to do this again after the accident.” Although it’s been undeniably challenging, Sarah feels proud of herself for remaining positive for herself and others. “I’ve learned that even though I‘m going through something hard, I can still help other people.”
