preparing-a-casting-for-setting
Working on a ring that I made in a previous video I show how to clean up and prepare a casting for setting. Essentially the work required is going over the entire piece with the exact same tools and techniques used to make it but only very lightly to take away the rough surface from casting. I then move on to a pre polish which although not essential, does make the final polish after setting much quicker and easier which means less risk of damage to any expensive and rare stones that may be set!

I have been lucky enough to have been taught by actual Bond Street shop model makers and my ambition is to share what I have learned through out my career to as many people as possible.
My vehicle to do this is the Diamond Mounter YouTube channel and now after nearly 1 year of uploading video guides, its time to take it up a level.
My ambition is to be able to make instructional videos with not just silver, but gold and platinum also. Some proper jewellers soldering equipment will enable me to create much more special pieces too! This will open up a whole new world of information I have to share.
There are many specific methods and techniques used for the different precious metals and knowledge about gemstones I can teach that will never enter my videos unless I am actually working with them.

Soldering a jump ring is something all practicing jewellers will be have done before many times and its probably considered a beginners level achievement but to shape a jump ring perfectly round and solder it very neatly is quite skillful work.
Even on a cheap charm bracelet believe its important to try and solder jump rings neatly as their strength is important and by practicing delicate soldering skills you are gaining ability to finish more complicated pieces to a higher quality.

For the latest full instructional guide we make the 'Britney' ring.
Its a nice design that shows off the stone very well.
Its not too complicated so I thought it would be a good design for practicing jewellers to try. In fact my version is slightly more complicated in the way that the claws curve under the stone bezel. I felt it needed an extra element of design rather than simply adding stones in places.
