Growing Sunflowers For Food | Failures And Lessons Learned
Today we are looking back at our 2021 growing season where we had some failures and lessons learned. Failures are really learning experiences and lessons learned are things we can take forward with us into the new growing season as we try our hand at growing sunflowers for food again in 2022. This time we are planning on growing a different kind of sunflowers the black mammoth sunflower instead of the Russian mammoth sunflower and see how they work for food.

Pets With A Purpose
Today on the Homestead, we are checking in on some of our animals as we do morning chores. Although these animals are pets, they are really pets with a purpose. All our animals live a great life with lots of love before these pets with a purpose ultimately end up providing for us. Cute piglets, fast growing lamb and goslings and an unexpected ... well long over due, surprise at the end.
Thank you so much for watching.

A system for growing fodder for rabbits is a great way to cut feed costs, especially when green foods are unavailable during the winter months. Before we started documenting on YouTube, we used to sprout wheat grains as winter fodder for our rabbits, and it worked amazingly. But after moving, we just got the system set back up! The indoor rabbit fodder system is up and running again, and the rabbits are getting some high-quality wheat fodder. This really reduces our dependency on pellets, at least for a maintenance ration for the rabbits, as the adult bucks, does, and juvenile rabbits all do amazing on this fodder system. If you want to save money on rabbit feed, are looking for a viable alternative to pellets, or just want to grow a tasty and healthy treat for your rabbits, growing fodder for your rabbits is an excellent way to achieve these goals!

Talk of the homestead community is popular at the moment. And a community that supports your homestead is, of course, a very valuable thing. But is the community we are talking about sustainable or resilient. Does a sustainable and resilient homestead community even matter? Today's video is a bit of a deep dive into what is hopefully a thought-provoking look at what a sustainable, resilient homestead and homestead community is.

Today we are pressure canning another family favorite Italian zucchini stew. This is a great canning recipe which can be eaten on its own or mixed with other sauces for a more veggie full meal. All and all this is a very simple pressure canning recipe and if you don't have zucchini like us you can substitute other fruits such as our snake gourds for the same tasty results!
Recipe:
Single batch
1 1/2 - 2 lbs zucchini
2 large onions
1 large pepper
3 tablespoons oil
2 basil leaves
1 tsp oregano
2 cloves garlic
1 tsp thyme
2 leaves mint
5 large tomatoes (approx 6 cups)
4 cups greens (Spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, beet tops)
Simmer for 30 minutes and then serve.
Canning batch
6 lbs zucchini
6 cups onions
3 cups peppers
oil
6 basil leaves.... or more, to taste
3 teaspoons oregano
6 cloves garlic
3 teaspoons thyme
6 mint leaves
14 - 18 cups tomatoes, pending the type ( I used 16 cups from San Marzano)
12 cups greens
This is a pressure canning recipe, so process pint jars at 10 pounds or 11 if you have a guage for 55 minutes.
Thanks so much for watching!

Making fish food may not seem like the most logical homestead endeavor but if you are raising fish having the ability to make their food can really save you money and close the loop on your systems in a sustainable manner. Raising fish goes well with having a garden as many of the otherwise waste items from the garden can be made into a very nutritious food for your fish. For us choosing species which are more or less herbivorous is key as these fish will readily consume and thrive on the fish food we have been making. So if your looking to raise fish on your homestead or keep ornamental fish just for fun knowing how to make your own fish food can be an enjoyable, cost efficient and healthy option to keeping and growing fish!
