How Dredging was Banned in VT
Fred Matheson David Deen, Westminister VT, House Fish and Wildlife chair now, is a professional guide, fly fisherman, river "steward" owns a fly fishing shop, and had two paying customers in tow one day. On "his river" in "his" fishing hole he found two LAWFULLY PERMITTED dredgers. They had words, nothing serious, but he left with his customers, the two guys dredging, one was the president of the NH club, the Northeast Gold Panners Association, and his VP, or secretary, I forget now, but I got the whole story from him, and old Willy Ford, therefore I KNEW the truth from the horse’s mouths. Deen, fabricated a scenario of constituents "complaining" to him, about trespassers on their properties, leaving trash, not asking permission etc. etc., and TOLD that to the legislative body the day he initiated the ban on dredging in the House. All lies. Knowing this, as Paul Mansfield (president then of the GMPV) and I were waiting on Representative Donahue, Senator Doyle, Representative Grad, Senator Cummings, and a few others on the ramp to the cafeteria, here comes Mr. Deen. As he approached, I stuck my hand out and said "Why hello Mr. Deen!" and he shakes my hand and says Hello! What brings you to the hill today? And I say “ah, well you know me, I'm the gold guy! The Prospector, the Director for the GPAA in Vermont!" and I squeezed his hand a little tighter as the smile flew from his face, and he tried to pull away. I said to him, "Ya know what, I need to ask you something, I already know the truth, so, I just need to hear it out of your mouth,,,tell me the reason why you singlehandedly stripped the recreation of 500 plus miners here in Vermont of dredging for gold, and like I said, I already know, so" And he got irate, sticking his finger out at my chest and says you really want to know, well when I come around the bend on MY river to MY favorite fishing hole and find two guys dredging in MY river,,,and I interjected "two LAWFULLY PERMITTED dredgers" and he said well By God, I'd had enough" and I said "so there really wasn't any constituents, landowners complaining to you then were there? And he says No by God there wasn't! And I said so you took it upon yourself, to strip Vermont and its taxpayers of their recreational hobby" Yes I DID he says, and headed to the bathroom. It took every ounce of intestinal fortitude I had at the time, not to follow him, and do personal harm to that old man,,,,thank God I didn't drink at that time of my life,,,,,,,,so there you have it. Don't let this happen in NH.

From that meeting, we immediately went to see Gaye Symington, Speaker of the House at the time, and told her the story. She says what would you like me to do, and I said he needs to be relieved of his position in House Fish and Wildlife, for using his position for personal gain"" and she says, I can't do that, I put him in there, there's nothing I can do, and she walked off.
