I get a lot of questions about what it took for me to become a software engineer and in this video, I talk a little bit about the process! •••••••••••••••••••••••• Keep up with my socials!! I’m almost 2 and a half years into my software engineering career and I’ve learned a lot in this short amount of time. I made a lot of mistakes that most new software engineers make. Of course, I’m not an expert since I’m new to this but I still think I can give out helpful tips to other engineers who might be coming into the field and avoid mistakes that I’ve made. So today, I have 3 pieces of early career advice for you that took me almost 2 years to learn.

Froshbite is live!!! I finished building an app to help high school students understand, manage, and plan the college search process, from their freshman to senior year. The web app is built using React and AWS (which I previously filmed a video on). This video takes you through the site and all the features I was able to complete. Froshbite can act like a student’s college search spreadsheet and all of the Playbooks also have great college search advice and college search tips to help guide students in the process. Planning for college in high school can be tough but I’m hoping I’ve built something that can help students in the college search process.
Feel free to check the site out :) https://www.froshbite.com/

Learning how to code can easily become overwhelming. Here's a video with tips and resources for learning how to code! I've also included some helpful resources down below:
TLDW
1. First, figure out what you want to build and why
- Have no idea? Start with Python
- Python resources:
- https://www.learnpython.org/ (go to the Learn the Basics section)
Want to build a website?
- Start with learning HTML, CSS, Javascript
- https://www.freecodecamp.org/ (step by step tutorials to build real projects)
Want to learn:
- Mobile Apps? Swift (iOS), Java (android), React Native / Flutter (cross-platform but learn Javascript first)
- Data Science + Machine Learning? Python
- Databases? SQL, NoSQL
2. Build on core Computer Science concepts (data structures, algorithms, etc)
- Take free online classes like Harvard’s CS50x Introduction to Computer Science
- Link to that class here: https://cs50.harvard.edu/x/2020/
3. Watch videos about coding to see how others approach a problem
4. Don’t get caught in a tutorial loop! Build something and apply what you've learned

This is just a chill video about what's on my iPhone X and the apps I use on a regular basis. I'm doing some traveling so my filming and editing time is a little limited. I hope you guys like this video! Leave a comment down below about what your favorite app is. I need some suggestions.

As I promised in my last video, here is a tutorial on building a bare-bones web app from scratch using react and aws amplify. These are the exact steps I used to get started on my personal project. This react app is also "serverless" which means that all the backend is in the cloud. Aws amplify makes it really easy to get you up and running when you want to build quickly. This is my first code with me tutorial video so please be gentle lmao. You'll find all resources linked below! Don't forget to subscribe :)

TL;DR :)
- Started my first software engineering job during the summer of 2018 and saved 20% after maxing out 401k and index fund investing
- Made sure my expenses were down to maximize savings
- Started doing my research on Reddit and BiggerPockets, I also had a parent who had a little bit of experience and who was a real estate agent for 2-3yrs right before the housing market crash of 2008
- Learned how to calculate cash flow and CoC return by creating my own excel sheets with numbers to analyze each property I was interested in
- Reached out to a real estate agent on BiggerPockets
- Got pre-approved through multiple lenders
- Put in an offer on a home
- Flew out to see the home for the first time after closing to do repairs and showings for potential tenants
- Placed property management to take care of the house and tenants on a day to day basis

Enjoy!

Hi engineering friends! Obviously, you should only commit to the major if you know it’s for you but I get questions a lot about students fearing to do CS because they don’t know if it’s right for them. There are so many reasons to major in Computer Science. Here are the reasons why I chose to major in CS and maybe why you should too :)

Hey y'all this video is all about what I listen to when I'm at work and coding for most of the day. Obviously, not all software engineers listen to the same things while they're programming so this is just about what I like and have found effective for me. Feel free to leave some comments down below on what you listen to when you're coding. I'd love to add some new songs/podcasts to my playlist!

When should you start applying to full-time software engineering roles? Great question! Here's a short video detailing my experience when I was starting to apply to software engineering roles.
