Øyonn Groven Myhren - Liti Kjersti (Norwegian folk song/medieval ballad)
This is a medieval ballad that exists in Norway in over 100 text versions, with over 25 melodies. It tells of a young girl (Little Kjersti) who is taken by "Bergekongen", the King of the Mountain -- sometimes "Alvekongen", the Elf King -- into his mountain. In other words she is "bergtatt" (literally mountain-taken). As shown in the illustration by Gerhard Munthe, Liti Kjersti is given a drink that makes her forget her past life -- when asked by the King of the Mountain, she replies: "in the mountain I was born..." and so on.
Noticed this was missing from youtube, so here it is again.

"What's so extreme about this" one may ask, but just listen to that bass. Yeah. That's dope.

The Royal Theme, given to Johann Sebastian Bach by King Frederick the Great of Prussia (1712-1786) as a sort of challenge three years before Bach's death in 1750, followed by two of Bach's variations on that theme. It's possible or even likely that the Thema Regium was in fact composed by Bach's son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, as he was the person at the king's court with the most knowledge about counterpoint -- the theme was intentionally composed so as to be difficult to write contrapuntal variations over.
Taken from the collection Bach titled "Musikalisches Opfer", or Musical Offering. All of the pieces contain variations on the Royal Theme -- this is intended as a sort of introductory selection focusing on the violin, and I think these go particularly well together (as if the whole thing doesn't...)
These recordings were directed by Jordi Savall, with the ensemble Le Concert des Nations, in 1999 and/or 2000. Released 2001.
