Introduction to Arabic Script: The Qaida begins with an introduction to the Arabic script, explaining that Arabic is written from right to left and introducing the basic shapes of the Arabic letters.
Alif (ا): Alif is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet and is often taught as a straight vertical line. It has no inherent sound of its own but is used as a vowel carrier to elongate the sound of the preceding vowel.
Ba (ب): Ba is the second letter. It is introduced with its isolated form, and its sound is similar to the English "b" sound.
Ta (ت): Ta is the third letter. It has different forms based on its position in a word. Its sound is similar to the English "t" sound.
Tha (ث): Tha is the fourth letter. It is pronounced like the English "th" sound as in "thin."
Jeem (ج): Jeem is the fifth letter. It has a sound similar to the English "j" sound.
Haa (ح) and Khaa (خ): Haa and Khaa are the sixth and seventh letters, respectively. They both have unique sounds that don't have direct equivalents in English. Haa is pronounced from the throat, while Khaa is a bit harsher and pronounced further back in the throat.
Dal (د) and Dhaal (ذ): Dal and Dhaal are the eighth and ninth letters. They are pronounced like the English "d" sound, with Dhaal being a voiced version.
Ra (ر): Ra is the tenth letter. It is pronounced like the English "r" sound.
Zay (ز): Zay is the eleventh letter. It is pronounced like the English "z" sound.
Seen (س) and Sheen (ش): Seen and Sheen are the twelfth and thirteenth letters. Seen is pronounced like the English "s" sound, while Sheen is pronounced with a sharper "sh" sound.
Swaad (ص) and Dwaad (ض): Swaad and Dwaad are the fourteenth and fifteenth letters. They both have emphatic sounds that are pronounced with added emphasis from the throat.
Taa (ط) and Daa (ظ): Taa and Daa are the sixteenth and seventeenth letters. They are also emphatic sounds, with Daa being a voiced version of Taa.
Ayn (ع): Ayn is the eighteenth letter. It has a unique and throaty sound that doesn't have an exact equivalent in English.
Ghayn (غ): Ghayn is the nineteenth letter. It is also pronounced from the throat but with a slightly different sound than Ayn.
Fa (ف): Fa is the twentieth letter. It is pronounced like the English "f" sound.
Qaaf (ق): Qaaf is the twenty-first letter. It has a sound that is produced further back in the mouth and is not present in English.
Kaaf (ك): Kaaf is the twenty-second letter. It is pronounced like the English "k" sound.
Laam (ل): Laam is the twenty-third letter. It is pronounced like the English "l" sound.
Meem (م): Meem is the twenty-fourth letter. It is pronounced like the English "m" sound.
Noon (ن): Noon is the twenty-fifth letter. It is pronounced like the English "n" sound.
Waw (و): Waw is the twenty-sixth letter. It is pronounced like the English "w" sound.
Haa (هـ): This is the standalone form of the letter "h" without the diacritic marks that are added to distinguish it from other similar-looking letters.
