capitalism-has-failed
Harpal Brar, chairman of the CPGB-ML, returns for the third time to the Durham Union (Durham University's students' union debating society), to propose the motion "Capitalism has failed".
His introductory speech is presented here. The full debate including his summation will follow. Harpal lays the charges against capitalism, and indicts it for its major failings:
1. Creating MASS POVERTY on an unheard of scale, amidst the plenty it has made possible - by powerful social means of production - with its recurrent CRISIS of overproduction.
2. Creating WAR on a world scale, sacrificing 120 million lives in conflict (WW1 and WW2) in the last century to destroy the 'surplus' population it has impoverished, and the goods it has produced which it cannot sell.
3. Creating FAMINE & STARVATION. Even in the heartlands of imperialism, millions live in absolute poverty without sufficient food, without employment, adequate education, housing, clothing or any future. In the exploited continents of Africa, Asia and Latin America, the situation is much worse. Survival is a struggle, with well over half the world's population living in absolute poverty on less than $2 per day. 13 million children die each year of preventable and malnutrition related diseases. Capitalism cannot save them!
4. Massacring 60 million in conflict since the end of WW2 in a continuous succession of bloody COLONIAL GENOCIDAL WARS, from Korea and Vietnam, through Chile, Guatemala, Haiti, Indonesia, Congo, Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, to Iraq and Afghanistan, to name but a few.
5. RACISM, chauvinistic nationalism and religious hatred, are the weapons capitalist imperialism uses to insight different armies, groups and nations to fight other working people, oppressed and exploited nations, in order to keep wringing profit from us all.
6. Having arrived right back at the start, in crisis of unprecedented proportions and standing poised once more to throw the whole world into bloody conflagration. CAPITALISM STANDS POWERLESS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS IT HAS CREATED.
Capitalism is past its sell by date. It is failing. It is up to working people to overthrow it and take ownership of the means of production, all productive wealth, and put in the place of this systematic exploitation, our own rule and our own economy, based on production through cooperation to satisfy the material needs of the vast masses of humanity.
But what's the alternative? Has communism failed? See this interview:
