I bought a new Asus ROG Strix G15 that will be replacing my (un)trusty Lenovo Legion 5. I had the Lenovo for just 2 years before the AC circuit failed.
The new laptop/workstation is an Asus ROG Strix G513 with a AMD Ryzen 4800H CPU and a Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 GPU. This particular configuration was difficult to find seemingly because most came with a 3050 with less memory.
I found the laptop from Costco warehouse deal! I went to my local warehouse to see if I could get it for the same price and it was $150 more expensive in the store! I had it ordered online and had it next-day'd to the store because I always have more Costco shopping to do.
~ Asus ROG Strix G513 Hardware
Now that I've used it for a bit I can say that the overall build quality of the Strix is better than that of the Legions. It also feels quite a bit more sturdy (especially the hinges), albeit heavier, than the Legion.
The keyboard and touchpad on the Strix are fantastic. The keyboard on the Legion was good but the touchpad was awful. It had driver issues (it didn't work right in the bios) and the mouse clicked if you leaned or twisted the bottom of the laptop at all.
I will say that the internal fans are a bit louder on the Strix compared to the Legion. It's simple to set the CPU governor to powersaving but there's also a way to work the fans and leds from Linux now too https://gitlab.com/asus-linux/asusctl
~ Asus ROG Strix G513 Linux
Linux seems to run on the Strix just fine with a recent kernel version! The only issues I ran into were with the WIFI adapter and with getting Bumblebee (dual-gpu configuration) to work with the RTX 3060 gpu.
- WIFI Adapter: MEDIATEK Corp. MT7921. Needs a recent Linux kernel version (6.x+) to work. The default version shipped with Debian 11 is too old.
- GPU: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060. Can only be used with Bumblebee/Primus. Doesn't seem to be a way to force-use it.
The Legion had a way to force the Nvidia GPU via a setting in the bios but the Strix has no such setting. Debian detected the Nvidia card and installed drivers for it but it cannot be used without Bumblebee.
Bumblebee is a pain to setup on Linux but it's necessary to use the Nvidia card. I started by installing these packages:
- bumblebee-nvidia
- nvidia-cuda-toolkit
- primus-vk-nvidia
For whatever reason, Bumblebee couldn't auto-detect the GPU so I had to tell it manually through the config file at /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia. I had to add BusID "PCI:01:00:0" into the Devices section and restart Bumblebee for it to work.
The GPU doesn't work automagically - you have to invoke it with pvkrun. So in Steam, you'd use: pvkrun %command%
~ Lenovo Legion Notes:
My old Lenovo Legion was not just *more* expensive than the new Asus laptop but the repair shop that looked at it said that Legions have a reputation for having lots of un-serviceable parts such as AC components.
The battery charger we built was ambitious but has limitations. We cannibalized a working power adapter and spliced a custom power regulator box (my Dad soldered and built the thing) which connected to very thin fuse that sat under the battery (it's what the red/black wires from the video are plugged into) which connected to the AC charge circuit. The power regulator box prevents the battery from charging above 80%~.
The resulting circuit lets the battery charge independently from the laptop's charging circuit. The drawback is that the laptop can't ever be in full AC-power mode and if there was too much power draw, the fuse trips and the battery stops stop charging.
Is it dangerous to bypass the charging circuit on the battery? Hell yes it is; don't do this at home. The reason why it works is because that custom regulator since it prevents the charge from going too high. Without it, the battery would charge until it exploded. Scary stuff!

Fedora 27 was released today so let's see how upgrading from F26 to F27 goes!
Turns out, the upgrade experience was pretty lousy. Despite Fedora 27 being a pretty unremarkable release (for the desktop user), there seemed to be a regression with Gnome/GDM in detecting whether or not the current display driver is compatible with Wayland. The result was my Nvidia driver was completely disabled when I logged in for the first time.
There was another issue with VMware on Fedora 27. Whilst it may have been an issue with VMware Workstation, its still rather annoying that simply upgrading my Fedora version cause yet another problem.
In general, I'm disappointed at the issues I ran into upgrading Fedora this time around. Fedora 25 to 26 was seamless and awesome. From 26 to 27 has been a pretty crummy experience.

Let's compare Xfce , #Mate, and #LXDE with #Openbox to see which #Linux desktop environment yields the best #GPU and game performance.
Each of the desktop environments was installed via the default #Ubuntu software repositories and benchmarked using #GpuTest, #MadShaders, #Unigine Valley, and War Thunder.
The benchmark parts in the video were captured with my Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket so it had no effect on the benchmark results.

Learn how to make a super simple platformer game with Phaser.JS!
Phaser js is a free & open source game framework for making web-friendly games with JavaScript and WebGL. You can checkout the game I wrote in this video in my GitHub here - https://github.com/egee-irl/jumper
PhaserJS is a framework or toolkit that provides you with the libraries and classes to build your own game from raw JavaScript. It is not an IDE or set of tools to build a game, the way Godot or Unity3D is.
If you are familiar and comfortable with JavaScript, Phaser is possibly the single best framework available for building relatively simple games.

A pre-preview "episode" of Casual Criminals, a series where a pair of dirt bags in GTA online fumble around looking for easy money but usually only finding trouble, a jail cell, a hospital bed, or all of the above.
The POV is from Teal1500 (so, not me) and shot in first-person because I really like the immersive feel that GTA has and I think it lends itself well to a silly RP like this because of how jank GTA's controls are.
I've been role playing my character in GTA for a while and I thought it would be fun to try to put a story together for him. Teal and I recorded this video from Teal's perspective to see if doing a GTA roleplay would be any good. As it turns out, it is!
Not entirely sure how much effort (if any) I will put into maintaining this "series". I have one more episode planned but if y'all think it's good, I might put together a few more.
This video was produced entirely on Linux! Teal recorded the footage on his Nobara Linux install and I edited it on my Tumbleweed with Kdenlive.

In this episode, we check out the latest Manjaro release, an Arch Linux distribution released on February 25th, 2020.
Manjaro is truly the "Linux Enthusiasts" distribution. Based on the venerable Arch Linux, it has the power of the AUR available to it as well as supporting all other package formats, AppImage, Flatpak, and Snaps, right out of the box.
This is Manjaro Linux with Xfce, which is the default desktop environment. Manjaro is known for shipping with a bunch of different Linux desktop environments but Manjaro xfce is the "flagship" version and has its own custom theme.
