November 10, 2009 – Thomas E. Woods – The Scott Horton Show – Episode 1027
Bestselling author Thomas E. Woods discusses the determined overestimation of Soviet economic strength by free-market ideologues who should have known better, shoddy Iraq War propaganda that may make Americans less credulous in the future, a reminder to conservatives that their beloved military is a prime example of government run amok, the misallocation of resources in centrally planned economies and the inevitable expansion of even strictly limited governments.

Ken Klippenstein discusses “CIA Documents Expose the Failed Torture Methods Used on Guantamo’s Most Famous Detainee”. The article exposes the unknown and inhumane torture methods used on Abu Zubaydah, once the success case cited by the Bush administration for its enhanced interrogation program. As revealed by earlier documents, Zubaydah was water boarded 83 times, spent a total of 11 days in a small confinement box the size of a coffin, and subjected to inhuman isolation techniques. Klippenstein details the new information, including having guards wear full body suits so that he wouldn’t get the satisfaction of seeing another human while imprisoned.

Doug Bandow explains why the pathological need for neocons and neoliberals in Washington to antagonize other powerful countries is so dangerous for America. Russia and China, he says, can both be our allies. It makes no sense for the U.S. military to be involved in every conflict everywhere in the world, and pretending to be the world empire will only endanger American interests by making future conflicts more likely.
Doug Bandow is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a regular contributor at Forbes Magazine, the National Interest, and elsewhere. He’s on Twitter @Doug_Bandow.

Scott is joined by Patrick MacFarlane to talk about the alleged Chinese balloon that captured the American news cycle a week ago. MacFarlane wrote a piece for the Libertarian Institute digging into the details and arguing against the fearmongering that has predictably resulted. Scott and MacFarlane talk about this story as well as the broader Cold War with China.

The great Tom Woods joins Scott to discuss the war state and Trump's bombing of Syria. Woods begins by going back to the founding and shows that even in the years immediately following the ratification of the Constitution, there was grave concern about the scope of national powers. The two then turn the clock forward and consider the disaster of the military industrial complex and the other 'privatized' government industries. Scott and Tom then discuss the War Powers Act and the AUMF and the consequences they've had for U.S. foreign policy.Tom Woods is the host of the Tom Woods Show and the author of numerous books including Real Dissent. William J. Astore returns to the show to discuss his latest article for Antiwar.com “On Afghanistan, Trump Is Right To Be Skeptical.” Astore discusses Trump’s apparent cognitive dissonance: he’s happy to bomb the Middle East indiscriminately, but is skeptical of escalating troops in Afghanistan and speculates that it’s Trump’s impatience, which is frequently a danger, which may be a saving grace in Afghanistan. Astore thinks Trump might have a nose for a losing approach, and that the last thing Trump wants is to be associated with what he believes is a losing effort in Afghanistan. But Trump, like Obama, faces increasing pressure from his generals. Scott and Astore discuss how the lack of an anti-war movement both in politics and in society generally have incentivized Barack Obama and Donald Trump to fold to the national security state and prolong the wars. Finally, Astore is particulary worried that the latest propaganda that Russia and Iran are backing the Taliban could lead to something far more serious.
William J. Astore is a retired lieutenant colonel (USAF). He is a contributing writer at Antiwar.com and TomDispatch.com. Read all of his work at his website BracingViews.com.

Freelance reporter Matthew Cole discusses America's schizophrenic policy in effect backing both sides of the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the ethnic and tribal makeup of the region, the American-created state's lack of anything to offer the population as a counter to the insurgents, the local information problem and the inability of the American government to plan for long term nation building, the splits within the factions and policies in Pakistan's ISI and military, the counterproductive nature of U.S. support for Musharraf and Karzai and the problem of getting at the remnants of the Arab-Afghan army in the Hindu Kush Mountains.

Scott talks to Mike Swanson about some of the problems in the U.S. economy and what we can expect in the near future. Scott points out the emerging real estate booms in places like Austin, Texas, as wealthy residents of states with severe lockdowns seek relief in states with less strict policies. These price spikes represent real demand, no doubt, but they come at the expense of local residents who can no longer afford to live in their home cities. Swanson adds that the real unemployment levels are much higher than official figures indicate, thanks to people who have been out of work so long they’re no longer actively looking for jobs. Historically, he says, this level of unemployment has led to social turmoil in the form of strikes, protests and even riots. He wonders to what degree the unrest seen over the summer and at the U.S. Capitol last month are related to the economic hardship that Americans have been facing for 11 months now. Unfortunately, explains Swanson, all the tools that the government has for addressing problems like unemployment and inflation only lead to even worse problems. Whatever form the eventual devastation takes, Americans must be prepared for more instability and hardship.
