Johann Burgmüller who was born in 1806 died in 1874, a Romantic period composer. “The Farewell” is in common 4/4 time. The key is in a-minor. The tempo is “Allegro molto agitato”, which means very fast and agitated. The music is in introduction-ABA-coda form. The texture is in homophonic, which is melody with accompaniment. The melody must be played louder than the accompaniment. In bar 4, 24, there are slowdown signs. In bar 5 and 25, “a tempo” means to go back to the original speed. This is an exercise for triplets. In Section A, the triplets are played by the right hand, and in Section B by the left hand. It is not easy to play those triplets fast and even, and requires lots of practice. Watch out for all the accents and sf signs and play them louder. In Section B, the music modulates from Section A’s a-minor to C-major. In bar 19 and 24, the right hand has 2-note slurs, and they should be played with “down-up” motion. Starting from bar 34, the music is in the coda phase, and it finishes with the IV-I plagal cadence.
