The Aussie Maker Meetup 2023
The 3rd Annual Australian Makers MeetUp was held in Melbourne on October 28th 2023. Hosted by @BuiltByChris and @DownUnderWoodWorks , nearly 30 makers descended on the Epping Hotel for a night of chat, drinks and a good feed. However, a smaller group of us also did a tour of several maker's workshops and had some side quests to explore @timbeconaus and even get a guided tour by the one and only @graduallywizardly !

I finally got to meet Mario @woodfather at his workshop, Ash from @themondaymeetup-raw3425 (better known as Woodwork and Whiskers on Insta) @kuffyswoodwork , Vipun Envisage Designs, Gav from North Wind, Longsplinter, @OzSawdustMakers, @barberspaddockwoodworking and hang out again with @2byforge, @woodworkingwithdassh and @SmallFryCreations. It was also tops to find two newer YouTubers Dave @MelbourneMaker and Kieran @kjh_woodworking whose channels I've now binged, as well as at least half a dozen other new Insta friends like Bespoke Carvings, Recycled Wooden Things and Ever_floret.

If you missed out this year, 2024 will likely be about the same time in Sydney. I hope to see you there!

My #kreg saw horse was too low to pair with my clamping #workbench , so I took care of that using the built-in track clamps to raise the sawhorse up to the same height with a couple of quick scrapwood blocks designed to hold large sheet good for #woodworking . Making some super strong timber / lumber storage racks for my small workshop became necessary when an overflow of wood meant I couldn't get any more work done otherwise. The wood was very heavy, but as usual, rather than buy something or do things the easy way, I decided to DIY and over-complicate the build to try some new things out by learning to do 45 degree mortise and tenon joinery... kind of. Not having tried this before however, I decided to cheat, with interesting results. It was also the first project I'd use my prototype table saw on so I could practice using the tool before I make a better version in the near future. As usual feedback and questions welcome. What is the best sandpaper for random orbital sanders? FlexOvit vs Mirka Abranet vs Diablo vs Sia / Festool vs Norton vs Smith & Arrow vs Irwin vs Klingspor vs Aldi. I review, test and compare 14 discs and nets in a Dusty Battle Royal to find the best value sandpaper for my workshop. A 14-way Random Orbital Sander head-to-head battle of these 120 grit sandpaper pads and nets available here in Australia. A good mix of traditional aluminium oxide, ceramic, zirconia oxide and silicon carbide discs and nets have been explored. I have been put them through real-world manual testing on both hardwood and softwood to see which perform better and how long each will last. I wanted to build a wooden toy box for my nephew for Christmas using free plans from WWMM. As I progressed the build I tarted it up a little by adding a tabletop football game as well. In Part 1 I christen my new Kreg K4 pocket hole jig to build the main frame and work out how to use my Square-Cut jig to make perfectly equal length boards with a circular saw.
