Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., didn't hold back Thursday in questioning the chief executive of the company that makes Truvada about the high cost of the drug used to prevent HIV with pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. "The list price is almost $2,000 in the United States. Why is it $8 in Australia?" Ocasio-Cortez asked the CEO of Gilead Sciences, Daniel O'Day, after noting the company made $3 billion in revenue off the once-a-day pill in 2018. O'Day responded that "Truvada still has patent protection in the United States, and in the rest of the world it is generic." He noted that, as announced last week, the drug is set to be generically available in the U.S. in September 2020. “There’s no reason this should be $2,000 a month," Ocasio-Cortez, who has pushed for the hearing before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Pete Buttigieg has made a documentary called "Mayor Pete," and the Majority Report crew watches the trailer. The themes of the documentary seem to be Buttigieg's experience as an out gay politician, his time on the campaign trail, and the shooting of a South Bend citizen by a police officer. It seems absolutely terrible. The crew is also not excited about the movie because Mayor Pete did some racist stuff when the police shooting happened, he is a very manufactured person and has had no impact on anything, and this film is simply a project meant to further this man's political career by cementing his backstory. I am not delegitimizing the fact that for a lot of gay kids it's amazing to see a gay presidential candidate like this. That is important. Everything else is [ __ ]. Like the idea that he was offering anything, anything substantively new to the public is ridiculous. And I just balk at these kinds of hagiographies, documentaries that clearly have final approval from the candidates themselves. I'm like, we're gonna have this revisionist history that this campaign was something to write home about. This campaign was like an entirely manufactured moment in history where he, by the way, he he peaked early in Iowa because he only appealed to white people — because as they gloss over in that trailer, and I'm sure they're looking at it from the perspective of Pete, which is not the right perspective to look at the fact that he fired this Black police chief and helped cover up these instances of racism in South Bend — he was a white-privileged wealthy Harvard candidate who fixed bread prices at McKinsey. There's nothing trailblazing about what he did, except for that one important but narrow part of what he offered to the world. Historian and author of the book Beyond the Vanguard: Everyday Revolutionaries in Allende's Chile, Marian Schlotterbeck, joins Sam to discuss the 50th anniversary of the US back coup of the Chilean government. In 1973, the United States played a significant role in the overthrow of Chile's elected Marxist president, Salvador Allende, resulting in the rise of a right-wing dictatorship under General Augusto Pinochet. The coup and the subsequent 17-year dictatorship saw the disappearance, death, and torture of thousands of Chileans, and this brutality prompted a strong reaction in the United States, galvanizing public opinion against U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. had a history of involvement in Chilean politics, driven by Cold War concerns and fears of communist influence in the region. Allende's election as a socialist president, pledging to nationalize U.S.-owned copper companies, intensified U.S. efforts to prevent his rise. Despite extensive covert actions, propaganda campaigns, and economic measures aimed at thwarting Allende's government, he narrowly won the presidency in 1970. Subsequent destabilization efforts culminated in the 1973 coup, although there were other domestic factors contributing to Chile's polarization and political crisis. While the U.S. was not directly involved in the coup, it had created conditions favorable to it, leading to unintended consequences and long-lasting impacts. In a 1965 Playboy interview, Haley quoted King as saying that Malcolm X was "a demagogue" and "a danger to the black community." However, a Washington Post report has revealed that King never actually said these things. The revelation that Haley fabricated King's criticisms is a reminder of the importance of critical thinking when consuming history. Just because something is written in a book or said by an expert does not mean it is true. It is important to always check the sources and to be aware of the biases of the author or speaker. In this case, Haley was a white man who was writing about two black men. It is possible that he was biased against Malcolm X and that he wanted to make King look better by making Malcolm X look worse. It is also important to remember that history is always being rewritten. As we learn more about the past, we may find that our understanding of it changes. This is why it is important to be open to new information and to be willing to challenge our assumptions.
