Stefano Paparozzi
Piano Sonata No.1
I. Allegretto [00:00]
II. Adagio [06:38]
III. Allegro con fuoco [14:14]
I'm proud to present you my first Piano Sonata (first of my latest compositional period, at least).
Since I came back writing Music in 2018, I always struggled to find a style, a language, a voice in which I could express properly; a sound both accessible and understandable, but not banal and predictable.
Always wandering between some experimental avant-garde and an easier minimalism, I aim at finding a middle way in which Music will be simple but not weak, interesting but not convoluted.
I think my first Piano Sonata is probably the best achievement I reached so far in this pursue (although of course this doesn't imply it's also my best work in a broader meaning).
Unsatisfied with most of the "canonical" minimalist outcome, I tried here to grab some of its features – namely the scarcity of musical elements used – and use them differently and combined with other techniques. The odd time signatures of the three movements (respectively 7/8, 5/4 and 11/8) should ensure the attention of the listener via their unusual unbalance, even under obsessive iteration; the repetition of the sections is related to the meter (section repeated respectively 7, 5, and 11 times). About the pitches, only scales with less than 7 notes are used (respectively of 4, 5 and 6), with internal modulations which makes the harmony richer, but keeping the unaltered the preset goal of using of few, simple elements.
If you're willing to play my Piano Sonata No.1, you can download the score for free from IMSLP → https://imslp.org/wiki/Category:Paparozzi,_Stefano.
