Play through the RPGs of the world like I have and you'll start to notice a trend. And that trend is that there's a heck of a lot of game designers out there who have fishing on the brain. Maybe it's the fact that they are in serious need of a vacation, maybe a little time away from the office, or maybe it's the fact that fishing and fish play such a large role in the lives of the Japanese public. Regardless of that reason we tend to find that there are a lot of games out there which feature the noble sport of fishing! So hey what the heck, I decided to go ahead and make a top 5! Why 5? Because fishing in Pokémon isn't a mini-game! This is SuperDerek's Top-5 RPGs that contain fishing mini-games!
Number 5!
Animal Crossing has a well-known and well-loved fishing game, but unfortunately it's not so much a game of skill as it is a game of reaction times and patience and persistence. In other words it's a lot like the real deal, which we all know is pretty boring, which is why it's at the bottom of this list.
Ok, I already know what you're saying to your monitor, but it's no use because your microphone's not turned on. You're saying, "Hey! If this is only a top 5 because Pokémon’s fishing isn't a mini-game, then why is Animal Crossing on the list when it's not an RPG?!" To which I can only respond that we can either sit here having a philosophical debate about what constitutes a Role Playing Game, or you can just go along with it so we can move onto the next game on the list which is...

Welcome back to The Game Collection! I am SuperDerek and Super Mario RPG is a game that I’ve known about for years but for some reason, I’ve just never gotten around to playing it. This came up during one of my live Q&A streams, and since then it’s been weighing on me. So let’s take a look at one of the strangest decisions Nintendo has ever made, and why it paid off. I am SuperDerek, and this is Super Mario RPG!
In March of 1996, Nintendo released Super Mario RPG in Japan, and then in the United States only 2 months later. What was this game? Is it Super Mario? Or is it an RPG? It was developed by Squaresoft, and published by Nintendo of America. It was an odd mashup of contrasting ideas we wouldn’t see the likes of again until the Kingdom Hearts series years later, but I’ve already talked about those games in another series. Super Mario RPG was the lovechild of Square and Nintendo. Square was having trouble replicating their success in Western markets, and Miayamoto was interested in seeing Mario realized in an RPG world. And with Square being the undisputed king of RPGs at the time, and Mario’s market domination, it was a match made in heaven.
