SUPPORT / DONATE: https://theofficialdavester2296.wordpress.com/ -- Here it is, the final boss! This one was pretty tiring to play, especially on the bass. Playing the bridge/outro part that I came up with was pretty fun though! Overall, it felt pretty fun trying to channel my inner thrash-metal. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy! ~DAR

Ah yes, this song and level. The first time we all encountered the Cyberdemon, greeted by a loud "BRRUGH" after shooting at one of the lost souls. As I mentioned in the previous video, I had been pretty pre-occupied this past week. I was pretty sure that I would have to push this one back to next week! However, to my surprise, I managed to power through and completed this one in time! Since we're nearing the end of the Doom 1 marathon, I figured I would change/spice things up a little bit for E2M8 and E3M8. Thanks to skimming the ZDoom wiki, I found the commands I needed for flying, NoTarget, and hiding the weapon sprite! I also decided to use Brutal Doom as well, since it just felt right for the occasion! Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Been really looking forward to this song, always really dug the vibe of this track!
I was in a more noodly mood this time around and decided to make a few changes and additions to the song.
Structure is mostly the same, aside from shortening the beginning by 2 measures, and the "DAR-style" extended outro/final-chorus.
I also slightly changed up the power-chord arpeggio part when the guitars first come in. I also decided to keep the guitars going, this time without palm muting. Initially, I hadn't planned on making up a lead part during this section. I wound up adding it after I had made the leads for the outro.
Speaking of which, I absolutely loved noodling around for the outro! Those last two measures from the original MIDI were awesome and I was vibing along with it!... but then it was only just 2 measures, and thus the MIDI restarts! So for this rendition, I knew I definitely had to find a way to extend that part.
Also, I'm glad that I decided to throw in a little white-noise riser effect to lead into the solo. I usually reach for one of my cymbal samples and reverse them, but I was feeling a bit "adventurous" and ran some filtered white-noise through one of my flangers. I don't typically use risers like this since I usually associate them with EDM-type stuff, or [insert any movie-trailer from the past like 10 years]. But it worked out quite nicely here, if I do say so myself!
On the topic of feeling a little adventurous and experimental, I decided to roll back the gain on my amp quite a bit. Now, while I will do this for my rhythms at times, I usually always keep my leads nice and saturated/distorted. However, doing my leads with lower gain/drive just wound up really having the right kind of "texture" for the track. I definitely need to not shy away from rolling back the gain dial in the future.
However, I did bring the gain back up to my usual amount for one of the rhythm guitar recordings during the outro. I still had the lower-gain tracks playing, panned hard-left and hard-right. However, the 3rd rhythm recording was panned over about 25% to the left and really added a little extra oomph to the outro's rhythm section!
Of course, even more oomph was added through the use of a synth and a simple choir part. The synth wound up playing the same thing as the string section. Then the choir part is just simply sustaining an F, and then quickly going up to a G every couple of measures. Subtle, simple, but definitely effective!
In the section leading up to the solo, I decided to throw in some french horns to add to the dramatic and hopeful tone of the song.
Lastly, I just added some tom drums during the outro for a little more impact. That, and I added a few more subtle ride cymbal parts in the sections preceding the solo.
At first, when I sat down to work on this one, I was pretty nervous that I'd have a creative block. Most of the time when I'm in "work-mode" I can hear the cover in my head when just listening to the original. Though, every once in a while, I'm unable to "hear" the idea for the rendition in my head. Thankfully, everything just kinda fell into place through the course of recording and messing around!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy my take on this lovely track! ~DAR

Oh man, you guys have no idea how long I've wanted to cover THIS song! This has been on my Covers To-Do List since all the way back when it was just a humble .txt file. I'm so happy to finally be able to cover this after almost 6 years!
Big thanks goes out to all whom have been voting for Metroid in previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS! Also shoutout to longtime subscriber "6usfsd adsfe" whom also suggested this song back 2.5 years ago during the first Cover Battlegrounds. Hope this one has been worth the wait! It certainly was for me, I remember just sitting at the start-screen and listening to this song all the time back when I was a kid. Metroid Prime was also my first Gamecube game (and yet to this day, I still haven't actually played it all the way through! Ironic really...)
In some ways, I'm actually glad it took me this long to finally get the opportunity to cover this track. I feel like with all the tricks and experience I've picked up over the years, I'm really confident in feeling that I was able to do this track justice.
As always, I really really wanted to try my best to keep true to the feel and spirit of the original. I wanted to maintain that spacey and electronic element, but I also wanted to inject some nice heavy rock/metal elements too.
First thing I really wanted to get down was the "radio" sort of sound effect. Of course after poking around, I came to realize the crackling and whatnot is supposed to be the sound of the Phazon material. I managed to luck out and find an audio-rip of the game and used the Phazon clip in there (link to the rip is towards the bottom here). I figured I'd take the geiger-counter-sounding sample and try to run it through some granualizer. After a bit of fiddling and using an arpeggiator, I got it sounding pretty computer/radio-like. However in the end, I wound up just combining and layering all three sounds together; the modified sample, the original sample, and even the sound from the original song!
One of the things I always loved from the original was that guitar power-chord (with flanger) part that kicks in throughout the song. At first, I was also going to throw a flanger on to my guitar track, but I decided, "no, it needs to HIT HARDER!". This was a job that not even a distorted guitar could satisfy! I had to bust out the BIG bass and crunch... the DC Murda Bazz synth/plugin (first came across this lovely thing back when I did my original song, "Get Gored"). After getting a nice, powerful, and dirty synth kick/bass, I layered that sucker underneath (or on top??) of the guitar. Then I threw on some other effects on to the guitar and automated them a little. Finding myself nodding along vigorously at this development, I pressed on to the other elements.
For some reason, I felt compelled to try adding some double-tapped guitar parts. Maybe its because I'm still real excited about finally being able to get that sort of tapping sound now. I really enjoyed how the part wound up sounding, as well as how it looks when played in the video!
I also really enjoyed thumping out the bass parts for this cover as well! To back track for a moment, after adding that hairy synth kick/bass, I felt like "no, it needs MOOOORE!", so that's why I went and plugged in my bass. Gave it a nice thump, but I felt like spicing things up a little... Before I knew it, I was already slapping out this almost Doomy sounding bassline!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover as much as I enjoyed making it! Also, it took incredible restraint to not go ahead and also cover the Menu Theme as well. It was sooo tempting, but I wanted to keep things fair for Cover Battlegrounds. Prime's Menu Theme is DEFINITELY going to be the next Metroid cover that this channel gets! ~DAR

This one really makes me think of some kind of old-school RPG.
Since I did "Jade Empire" earlier in the marathon (and really enjoyed doing the whole retro/synthwave thing), I've been really looking forward to covering another stewboy track!
I kept the song structure the same, but I did wind up adding another synth part and a new string-section bit all in the 2nd half (when everything finally hits, and gets all pretty-sounding).
This was a nice and relaxing one to put together. Also, as a heads-up, we'll be jumping to MAP22 up next. Was doing some thinking and had decided to save MAP21 for towards the end of the marathon.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Well, it's been a long time coming, I've finally gotten around to making another Ace Combat cover =)! About a week ago, I decided to finally sit down and finish Ace Combat 4, and then went on to play 5 and Zero. Having beaten these three, I felt really motivated to start work on a cover! However, I got really stuck on this one for a little while. I almost gave up on this one, but thanks to my stubbornness, I kept at it and got it to sound the way that I wanted.
To my surprise, I managed to fit a rhythm guitar part into this song. After I finished recording my bass, I decided to plug in my Ibanez just on a whim. Then I started strumming along and playing harmonics, and it just felt right to me.
Anyways, I hope you guys all enjoy this little tribute to Ace Combat 5 =)! Sorry that it took me this long to finally get around to making another Ace Combat cover! ~DAR

Finally got around to working on this great MAP01 track from Back To Saturn X!
I got stuck for a while on this one actually. I spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to use the acoustic throughout the whole thing (like in the original).
I finally decided to use my Ibanez for the majority of it, saving the acoustic for that nice little bit towards the end.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy! ~DAR

Sorry for the wait on this one! I had gotten sidetracked with getting "DAR FM" set up, as well as dealing with a long road trip. Now that things are all taken care of, I'm back in action!
I think this is probably one of the first times I've messed around with doing a couple of tempo changes. Mainly for the part where the clean guitars kick in. I also wanted to try and sort of capture a "jungle" kind of vibe for that part too, so I decided to throw in some conga drums.
I really liked the atmosphere of this track, suspenseful and eerie! Also, that guitar part halfway through was a bit tricky to learn, but in the end I think I managed to nail it! Then of course, I had quite a bit of fun with the outro as well.
Anyways, as always, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR

Decided to quickly throw this together since I had promised that I'd render out a MIDI version of my "Live to Forget" cover. Shoutout to @Beta_Mixes for requesting this MIDI rendition. Cheers, dude!
As always, the MIDI is available for download down below. Feel free to use it in your Doom WADs or other personal projects!
Just a heads-up for any Doomers/mappers, since this MIDI is larger than 96kb, things might not work right if you're trying to use this in a vanilla-compatible WAD.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this little MIDI rendition of my cover! ~DAR
