today is August one 2020 I list out a number of chores that need to be done in order to prepare for harvesting produce in the fall.I can't produce more than maybe 10% of what my family needs which makes relationships with others and building social capital more important than ever. this is just a brief insight into the chores I have to do to get ready to provide a little bit for the table come October November time frame. You have to own some of your production for things you consume. Growing even just a little bit of food for some sign dishes for the table provides a lifetime of rewards. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qylHs-sqeI
It has taken a few years for some of the concepts to sink in and become a reality but I am very glad I started to turn to perennial fruits and vegetables as the long-term solution to what I want to get out of my backyard. No longer is there a yard in the back. Rather it is rapidly developing into a food forest built from below the soil upwards. In 2010 I began the food forest with blackberry, raspberry, and strawberry rootstock plants from Nourse Farms in Massachusetts. I also started our first asparagus bed at that time.

The following year I planted more blackberries and spread some of the raspberry runners to other parts of the front and back yard and I built a beautiful triangular-shaped multi-tiered garden for more strawberries. Last spring I expanded on the forest with 12 blueberry and 6 elderberry plants, another set of 25 asparagus for a complete second bed, and more blackberry and raspberry plants.
http://todolisthome.com The edible landscape is not complete just yet. In the spring I will be planting cranberry, wintergreen, emerald carpet, lavender, rosemary, thyme, and salal in the swales and hugelkultur wood beds I have built in the backyard. Then the multi-dimensional food forest will be a reality and I will be better prepared to write and instruct others on how to incorporate some of my creations into their visions.

This video starts a series of five short ones on our favorite garden hacks. A garden hack is an action or a series of steps taken to introduce or improve a process and efficiency. Garden hack 1 - Grow what you eat. We have tried to grow plants we don't eat. Especially when we started out gardening. Broccoli, cauliflower what were you even doing in our gardens?
The best advice is to keep it simple and grow what you eat. Even better grow what you love to eat. For example, we love pizza. So we grow Pizza which is partly tomatoes, basil, garlic, oregano, thyme, etc.
Video includes a short tour of the some of the fruit variety we have grown over the years.
Tony's Garden Hack 1
1 - Write out your weekly menu.
2 - What ingredients go into those meals?
3 - What would be cool to grow?
4 - Plant or sow something today.
Most people love pizza and can put parsley and basil in pots and under lights.

Take a look at the busy beehives in September 2015. They are busy with bringing in pollen and water. the male drones are also starting to be displaced from the hives. Their purpose is served and there's not enough honey for them. Only the Queen and female caretakers survive through the winter.

http://todolisthome.com/blog The female squash bug lay their eggs at the base of leaf stalks, and the caterpillars develop and feed inside the stalk, eventually killing the leaf. They soon migrate to the main stem, and with enough feeding damage to the stem, the entire plant may die. On July 14 I had 5 squash plants growing in the gardens but...
the evil squash vine borer killed two of them. The damage and my efforts to save the remaining plants was recorded in Episode 111. This is what villain looks like as it grows and eats its way through the stem of the plant. It's a nasty pest but I caught it from doing too much damage to the remaining three plants. There were beautiful squash growing on them and I wasn't going to let them die without a fight. With a mixture of hummus and manure, top soil, peat moss and compost I recovered the stems of the three good plants and I want to show you how many more squash we harvested.

As plants grow in the garden they need support. Especially in the early stages. Over the years and throughout the landscape of used the green stretchy tie tape to support all kinds of veggies and fruits. It is undeniably the most versatile way to support plants with just sticks from the yard and a little bit of work and sometimes imagination.
We want to make our work less as time goes. Green stretchy tie tape does that because it is strong and holds plants in place allowing for growth. In particular, there is room for vertical growth with the support of stretchy tie tape. Even though I use tall trellis systems for tomatoes and cucumbers they still need support for exuberant growth. Marigold, bushes, and trees need this tie tape too.
