***SOLD*** Most Japanese cars this age have long since been killed off by rust, so it caught my eye to see this old Toyota in such good condition, and I decided to stop and take a closer look. It had 83,000 miles and the seller claimed it to be in excellent condition, but the inspection sticker expired in 2008. Still, it's a rare find these days and is in very good cosmetic shape, except for a small rust spot and a broken taillight.

An example of how to settle a long-running Internet debate and bust a revisionist history myth, by reading manuals, books, and magazine articles, doing some research, and confirming it with your own tests. C'mon folks, it's not that hard!

The Realistic SCT-86, Optimus SCT-86, and RCA SCT-510 were a series of cassette decks sold by Radio Shack from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. Their combination of small size and good performance make them a great way to add cassette tape recording and playback to your stereo system without taking up a lot of space.

A small and inexpensive, but well built, desk fan from the '80s. It could probably use a cleaning and oiling because it ran quite slow when I first turned it on. I don't have much use for it anymore, because it always stays cool down here in the basement, and most of the rooms upstairs now have ceiling fans installed.

Clips of the "Nightlight" DTV infomercial that will be looping on various analog broadcast TV stations in the USA until July 12th, 2009. Ch.2 WCBS-TV from New York City, Ch.3 KYW-TV from Philadelphia, and Ch.4 WNBC(TV) from NYC were received in central New Jersey using the built-in tuner of a VCR with an indoor rabbit-ear antenna and recorded onto VHS tape. This is playback from the tape.
Note that WCBS-TV is not airing the Spanish version of the DTV infomercial or an ID slide. They just loop the English version with a few seconds of dead air where the ID slide normally would go.

The cassette counterpart to Panasonic's "Dynamite" 8-track player: the Take 'n Tape portable cassette recorder, model RQ-711S, circa 1973-1975. Yes, people were already using "tape" as a verb back then!

A vintage incandescent street light, probably from the early '50s or older. This is one of the few I've seen with an ornate multi-part stalk (instead of just a single pole) and an external wire going to the lamp. Notice the decorative scroll between the two stalks.
Sorry for the shaky footage in the first half of the video, there is no place to pull over on this narrow road so I just had to stop and put on my flashers! Luckily it is a lightly travelled residential street, in a very old neighborhood. In fact, almost all of the lights on this road are still incandescent! I'm sure the residents like it that way, due to the softer glow, more natural color, and lack of "cycling" or ballast buzz.

Subsidiary Communications Authorization (SCA), or subcarrier, is a method used by FM radio stations to provide additional services and audio broadcasts, such as reading services for the blind or programming for specific ethnic groups. SCA receivers are typically built to receive only one frequency and cannot be easily tuned to a different station.
This radio is built to receive "ICN", the Italian language 67 kHz subcarrier of 88.3 "Jazz 88" WBGO in Newark, NJ. My reception is not that great, so the audio has a lot of static, but nonetheless it is a simple way to receive special programming without needing to use an Internet stream or pay for a subscription.
