Ep. 5240 – Jacob Sullum on the Political Response to Coronavirus – 4/17/2020
Reason Magazine senior editor Jacob Sullum talks to Scott about some of the latest coronavirus news. He comments on President Trump’s headline-making claim that he has the sole authority to decide if and when the economy would reopen, which Sullum asserts really belongs to the governors. Trump has backed away from his claim, but he still appears to support making progress toward reopening businesses sooner rather than later. Doing so would probably be a good thing, says Sullum, since the economic toll of the current measures have already been devastating, and only continue to get worse. Sullum reminds us that political decisions are often made with respect to the obvious consequences, and rarely to the unseen ones. For us, this means that politicians are likely to be overcautious in shutting things down without properly considering the massive toll to both the economy and to human life that is sure to result from such drastic restrictions.

Ray McGovern is back to talk about America's relationship with Russia. President Biden met with Putin recently, McGovern explains, which is good for Biden's stance toward Russia, and, of course, for world peace. War with Russia is sometimes held out as an actual possibility, especially over supposed acts of provocation like Russia's annexation of Crimea or the various cyberattacks of recent months. But since Russia has nuclear weapons, there's simply no world in which we could fight a full scale war—the consequences could be the destruction of the entire human race. Whatever Biden's foreign policy legacy is over the rest of his term, maintaining peace with Russia must be at the top of the list.

Sheldon Richman, vice president of The Future of Freedom Foundation, discusses his article “We Must Not Be the World’s Policeman;” the Obama loyalists desperately grasping for reasons to attack Syria; why there shouldn’t be a “red line” anywhere requiring American military intervention abroad; too much talk about boots on the ground and not enough on collateral damage from US air strikes; and why AIPAC seems to be the only organized group pushing for war.

Eric Margolis, foreign correspondent and author of War at the Top of the World and American Raj, discusses how Egypt is becoming yet another foreign policy humiliation for Obama; the Israeli government's uncharacteristically sloppy PR on Egypt rallying to support an unpopular Arab dictator; how the Obama administration is trying to walk a tightrope between acknowledging the human rights abuses in Egypt and ignoring the 40 or so years of US support for those same abuses; and why deposing the Egyptian government, relied on economically by almost everyone in the country, will require a broader revolution or the army's support.

Scott interviews Nasser Arrabyee about Yemen, where the U.S. continues to back Suadi Arabia in waging a war of starvation against the people of Yemen. Scott calls this the very worst thing our government is doing, and yet by and large the American people don’t much care about it. Arrabyee says that Houthi leaders are beginning to talk with the Saudis through backchannels, which could be the first step toward a deescalation of the bombing and a reopening of airports, which would allow desperately needed foreign aid to get to the Yemenis.
Nasser Arrabyee is a Yemeni journalist based in Sana’a, Yemen. He is the owner and director of yemen-now.com. You can follow him on Twitter @narrabyee.

James Ostrowski discusses why Ron Paul’s electoral chances are much better than four years ago, thanks to his grassroots support and the clownish field of Republican primary candidates; how Rick Perry’s penchant for shooting himself in the foot could narrow the field down to “plastic man” Mitt Romney and Paul; the politics of fear and bigotry in the Republican Party; Herman Cain’s dubious credentials as a Tea Party candidate; and why the 2012 general election is “Ron Paul or not at all” for voters who see America as perilously close to failing as a country.
