But what is "sidechain compression"? "Compression" is just a fancy word of saying "dynamic volume control". It automatically controls the volume of a signal input based on how you set it up. In an extreme way, compression can be seen as a limiter. It limits the volume spikes of a signal, depending on your choices. When you use "sidechain compression" however, you simply control the volume of a signal based on another signal. If signal 1 hits, the volume of signal 2 changes. It changes based on how you tweak the controls (volume, intensity, tension, etc.). I often use the Fruity Peak Controller for this, because it's very easy to set up. Sidechain compression is very cool and effective on reverb. It can also clean up your mix quite a lot. Another good practice is to use sidechain on a lead/sound and a kick. If the kick hits, the lead ducks. Really... try it out! Anyways, this is how I do it: 1. Pick your lead that needs reverb. Make sure it's on a mixer channel. 2. Select a free "send" channel. It's now just called an "insert" channel. Name it "reverb" if you like. 3. Open your favorite reverb plugin. Make sure it's fully wet (no dry signal coming through). 4. Now go to your lead channel and use the "feed" knob to feed the lead into the reverb channel. The knob value determines the amount. 5. You can just shape the reverb however you like in the slots below your reverb plugin. 6. Go to your lead channel and open the "Fruity Peak Controller". Set "BASE" to value 20. Also, hit the "Mute" button to unmute. 7. Go to your reverb channel and right click on the volume slide. Then click "Link to controller..." 8. In the drop-down box, click on "Peak ctrl - Peak". You don't need Logic Pro or any fancy plugins to make this. Be aware: this is only the TAIL part of the kick drum. This means that the kick isn't finished yet. It still needs a fresh low end (sub bass) and a tok (attack or punch). It may also need some extra layering. However, building the tail is often the hardest part. It's basically always the starting place and the biggest challenge. In this video I'll simply show all the effects and settings that creates this hardstyle kick. Use it as important information to build your own. Watch it as many times as you need. You have to practice this... At the end of the video I play around with the tail. I often do this to get a feel for the quality of the tail. If it sounds nice and crunchy on different notes, it's probably a good tail. I also shorten the kick, because it's a little bit too long. This basically works for any type of EDM genre. I will simply be showing you all the settings. I started with the Choir 2 preset in Sytrus and changed some parameters to get this sound. Oscillator 1 actually isn't active. You can as well ignore these settings. In this moment of "ignorance", make sure you don't forget to grab my free sample pack. Download it via the link above. Oscillator 2 is the only active oscillator. Just look at the settings, especially the type of waveform on the top left. Only filter 1 is enabled and it's set to a LP3 type of filter (Low Pass 3). The DRIVE knob works well to boost the signal, so I turned it open. In the FX section, only the chorus is enabled. It's set to 4 voices with quite some depth and speed. This helps to add some fullness and movement to the sound. The Sytrus is routed to a mixer track. Here we can give it some extra effects. The first effect in the chain is an EQ. With the EQ the sound is shaped to remove some mid frequencies and add some high frequencies. The waveshaper doesn't do much. It boosts the volume slightly. Of course, the choir synth needs some reverb. This gives it a sense of space. I used the Valhalla reverb here and shaped it with some effects. This is all as far as the sound goes. Keep in mind that you can tweak it however you want. It's a matter of taste and what sounds good in your mix. Now let's play some chords with it! If you don't know chords, please watch my "How to Make Chords in FL Studio" video. Drawing longer notes like I do, makes it sound more string-like or pad-like.
