In this video, I take the lifestyle medicine series forward with the second installment of the microbiome. I start by recommending a great book as a resource (The Good Gut by Dr. Erica & Dr. Justin Sonnenberg) for developing a solid understanding of the microbiome and the role it plays in our lives. I talk about how mice studies have helped demonstrate the role of the microbiota in the development of the donor phenotype after a fecal transfer despite no changes in the diet. I go on to discuss how the GI microbiome has a role in metabolism, the immune system as well as our behavior, personality and our brains function. I share my concern over the increase in immune-mediated diseases and obesity as well as the changes in our lifestyles compared to a few decades ago. I mention some challenges that we face incorporating the information we have learned into a new and improved standard of care.
