It was a manual chore for centuries. Jerome Increase Case (I have often wondered what the I stood for in JICase) began his manufacturing of threshing machines in 1843. Jerome re-engineered a “ground hog threshing” Machine for his first endeavor at inventing new machines. To market and manufacture his re-engineered Ground hog threshing machine Jerome founded the J. I. Case Company. Surviving many mergers and name changes his company became the Case Corporation. Then it became Case International in 1985 when Tenneco merged the farm equipment division of International Harvester with their J.I. Case division. One more merger was in store for the Case corporation. That merger was with New Holland. Today Case is now known as CNH Industrial, manufacturing both the Case IH brand and the New Holland brand of equipment. Back to the history of J.I. Case’s first threshing machine. Using an 1830 ground hog threshing machine as a guide, Jerome Case developed one of the first workable threshing machines. What is a Ground Hog threshing machine you ask? A Ground Hog Thresher got its name from its squat posture and from the rumbling and growling noises it made as it separated the grain. Jerome first used his refined ground hog threshing machine in 1843 and refined it in time for the 1844 harvest. Having achieved success, he first manufactured his machines in a small shop in Racine Wisconsin, and then built a three-story brick factory in 1847 on the Root River. Constantly improving Jerome added a new vibrator process in 1852. By 1853 Jerome was so successful he was selling his machines throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Always searching for new power sources Case moved from hand power to horsepower, to steam power to run his threshing contraptions. Then along came gasoline and diesel power. Hand power was ok for limited needs. Horsepower was also limited. Steam power presented an explosion possibility and fire danger. Gasoline and diesel power proved to be the best and safest sources of power to use. To power his thresher Case built the first gasoline powered tractor in 1892. NOT really. That honor belongs to John Froelich who invented the first one-cylinder tractor also in 1892. Later becoming the Waterloo Boy tractor. See my video on John Froelich and his tractor with the link in the description. Back to Case: A fellow named William Paterson, working for Case, developed an experimental gas traction engine in 1892. (Though patent dates suggest 1894.) The early machine ran, but not well enough to be produced and sold. Case was on the track to success though. Let’s move on ahead past the early series of tractors and focus on Case’s 930 and 1030 tractors. Case 930 and 1030 tractors both came equipped with a diesel engine. The Case 930 also was available with a gasoline engine. The Case 930 series came out in 1960 and the 1030 series came out in 1966. Both the 930 and 1030 tractors ended production and sales in 1969 with the introduction of the Agri-King series tractors in 1970. And here we go guys. These are the Case 930 tractors on this side, and Case 1030 tractors over here. These are all made by SpecCast and they're 1:64th scale. I am Logan and I’ve just got to share with you an awesome Howard Johnson’s Ice Cream truck and the story of Howard Johnson’s. So, smash the like button and let’s get into it. There is a similarity between the start of the Good Humor Ice cream bar and Howard Johnson’s Ice Cream. Harry Burt owned a pharmacy and soda fountain in 1920 and after inventing the Good Humor Bar, Burt wanted to sell more ice cream to more customers on the street. Burt turned to Frederick Jones, an inventor who developed a mobile freezer truck for Burt’s Good Humor company. The Good Humor Ice cream bar was put on the road. (See my video on the Good Humor Ice Cream truck with the link below after seeing this video) Just five years later in 1925 Howard Johnson purchased a small pharmacy and soda fountain in Quincy, Massachusetts. The Soda fountain quickly became the most profitable part of his business. Johnson also owned a concession stand at the beach serving Hot dogs and 28 flavors of Ice cream. With these successes Johnson decided to open his first sit down restaurant business. The restaurant business was good but along came WWII. The war took its toll on Howard Johnson’s like it did on every other business not directly benefiting the war effort. However, the business was revitalized during the 1950s as America was on the move. Additionally, Howard Johnson opened hotels called Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge which flourished along the turnpikes in America. The Motor Lodges helped keep America moving. As America kept moving, Howard Johnson’s kept growing and changing. Eventually problems arose and Howard Johnson’s restaurant and hotel empire went through ownership changes at the end of the 1970s and 1980s. Imperial Groups PLC of London acquired the company. They sold Howard Johnson’s to Marriott Corporation in 1986. The business split with Marriot selling the hotel business to Prime Motor Inns but keeping the restaurants. Unfortunately for Marriot, the number of restaurant locations began to drastically decrease, and by 1995 only 84 remained. They became outdated and most of the remaining restaurants closed during the beginning of the 21st century. In 2005, only eight remained. Since 2016 only one Howard Johnson’s restaurant is still open. BUT it is under independent ownership. Throughout its years operation, Howard Johnson's offered numerous branded merchandise items, including vintage menus, soda cans, toy ice cream trucks, and many other items. Like a Howard Johnson’s 1948 Ford open station neighborhood Ice Cream truck. Unfortunately, when I scoured the internet, I couldn’t find anything on the history of Howard Johnson’s Ice cream trucks except pictures. The first picture is of Howard Johnson standing in front of one of his Ice Cream trucks with some of his business associates. Howard Johnson’s Ice cream trucks were dishing out Howard Johnson’s 28 flavors of Ice cream. Johnson’s Ice Cream trucks were watched for, and did brisk business in the neighborhoods they operated in. Howard Johnson’s Ice cream was featured in many grocery stores and supermarkets. Howard Johnson was one of the first restauranters to offer his restaurant dishes as frozen food products in grocery stores. Howard Johnson was very innovative in his early days which helped shaped the America of the 50s which we long for today.
