This is what I've been working on for the majority of my Spring Break.
Recently, the SM64 TASing community started work on an improved version of the 1 Star BLJLess TAS made in 2015. Numerous things were found, including a new strat to enter Bowser in The Dark World (Saving several seconds) and a new strat to get past the 30 Star Door (Saving over a minute).
Using my experience in making the Falcon 64 1 Star BLJLess TAS, I did some work to improve the upstairs movement section, which skips the 50 Star Door, 70 Star Door, and the endless stairs. After two do-overs to increase optimization and help from another TASer to make the ending one frame faster, this is the result. It beats the old attempt in the 2015 version by over 5 and a half seconds, skipping the necessary doors and stairs as efficiently as possible.
The endless stairs were a notable nightmare to efficiently pass, thanks to numerous things. Having the necessary speed to skip past the stair's warp function isn't enough; Mario's position is also crucial. The warp occurs at Z = 902, and Mario's position needs to be between 906 and 903 at the speeds he's going at here to bypass it. The problem is that the stairs themselves limit how precise Mario's position can be while landing, making this even more of a chore.
If my speed value at the endless stairs were 0.04 units per second slower, it would be too low to skip the stairs. That's how precise this is.
