Poultry farming: no gas, no eggs
The poultry industry in Lower Saxony warns of the consequences of a gas shortage in the agricultural sector and demands priority for its branch in the supply.
This is reported by the 'Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung', citing a letter from the association's chairman, Friedrich-Otto Ripke, and the managing director, Dieter Oltmann, to the Federal Network Agency.
In it they emphasize that without gas, it is not only the supply of poultry meat and eggs that is at risk.
There would also be direct animal welfare problems in the companies. From the hatchery to the barn to the slaughterhouse, all companies in the poultry industry are dependent on the energy source.
Short-term energy restrictions would have 'immediate impact on residents' food security'.
The association representatives also write: 'We see the well-being of the animals as endangered as far as there are restrictions in the energy sector.
' They state that the poultry industry is energy-intensive.
'For the Lower Saxony poultry industry alone, including the production of poultry feed we have calculated an annual gas requirement of around 1,735,311 megawatt hours.'
